The scorecards were for shit, but the right man got the nod. No doubt in my mind about that. Canelo didn't press the action. I had a few theories as to why during the fight, but, in the end, I just didn't have a good answer. It's almost as if Canelo had too much respect for Cotto as a warrior to tear into him. The kid was crying after beating him. You could see Miguel's punches weren't enough to keep the bigger man at bay. I kept waiting for Alvarez to step it up, but that moment never came.
Razor Thin Fight Cotto Was Going to Get Jobbed Regardless

Canelo didn't need to press the action. He was outboxing Cotto just fine in the middle of the ring. Canelo isn't a pressure fighter, he's a boxer and a very underrated one at that.Comment

The HBO version was the equivalent to any Pacquiao fight of which Lampley covered. In other words heavy deep throating for the house fighter.
That said I had Alvarez winning in a close competitive fight. The scoring was horrendously lopsided and didn't think the scores were as accurate as was shown.
Oh well, moving right along.Comment

I don't generalise fights like that, it is clear that at the end of the fight Cotto had less in the tank, had been more beat up and had absorbed more punishment. But scoring is round by round, and Cotto banked rounds by making Canelo miss, outworking him, and controlling Canelo with his jab. I had it 104-103 going into the last and Canelo closed the show. I have seen both versions, I thought Boxnation were more on point, if slightly giving Cotto too much credit in the first half of the fight.Comment

Obviously, this is true. He won the fight. But, usually, when a top fighter feels he has the advantage over another top fighter, he goes for the kill. He tries to make a statement. This isn't Guillermo Rigondeaux, after all.Comment

Alvarez was taking a conservative approach I believe due to his bad rep for phasing out late in fight's. Thus fighting in more calculating spurts. I agree, Canelo won but the scoring was too lopsided.Comment

Yup moretti giving cotto only 1 round is pathetic.Obviously you are a Cotto fan, and I would again stress that I have no horse in this fight, I like both guys. They both get too much stick in my opinion, but a Canelo domination is not what happened. Cotto mostly outboxed him for 6 rounds until he started to slow down, it wasn't like he nose dived either, he slowed down 15-20% not much, but just enough for Canelo to take the rounds. Canelo hurt him in the 8th and 12th, but not seriously wobbled. Cotto actually came back and won the 11th. It was a close fight.Comment
