that fight was very short.
alvarez kills himself to make 155 lbs. he looks like a different person at the weigh in.
he walks the line between being deteriorated at 155 [lol @ this new wegith class,] and being able to justify not becoming a full middleweight, and having to fight guys who are his size.

would canelo rather be drained to the degree he's drained tonight, or not have a 15 lb weight advantage?
that's the line he walks. he'd rather be big and have to starve a bit in training camp. he's going to make cotto look small in there. he'll physically move him with his shots, and i think he'll take his gas without much fuss.
cotto's a great puncher, but he's not a MW. at canelo's age cotto was a 140 lber. canelo clearly is a middlewieght. look at what he has to do to get to 155.

i think cotto's the more skilled boxer at this stage, but canelo's no slouch. he's a dynamic offensive fighter for a guy who isn't lightning fast and ultra athletic.
it's a lame answer, and a lame reason for a fight with a good clash of styles to be relatively predictable, but i think canelo's size is going to give cotto too many problems. he's giving up almost every advantage. canelo's hands appear to be just as fast, he's got a better reach, and his size is going to afford him a much bigger punch and chin. giving up 10-15 lbs is significant, particularly when you're already topped the hell out and in your 30's against a guy who is 10 years younger and much more muscular and heavily built.
we haven't seen it in a while, but cotto can be hurt and made to cower and retreat. the best way to beat him has always been to hit him with something big and rattle him. at 140 and prior to the mosley fight he bit down and fought, and his power would bail him out. post mosley, and particularly post margarito 1, he gets on his bike.
i think cotto's going to get hit with something big and get on his bike. i'm not sure if canelo cuts off the ring well enough or has the footspeed to stop cotto when he's focused on moving and not getting knocked out. he's always been a solid boxer, has cotto, and canelo's a lot less aggressive than a lot of top mexican fighters.
if cotto wins it's going to be because he's able to outclass canelo with his boxing. i'll be very surprised if he can box that well, and canelo will do that poorly. if the fight is evenish, and both guys are landing, cotto is going to get hurt and change his gameplan. if he doesn't walk away witth the fight he will lose.
if he somehow outclasses canelo it will be the best win of his career, and i'll be super happy for him.
