i would say that sexually exploiting vulnerable women is a much more serious offence than saying mean things on twitter, racist or not. it's not as if he's actually out there beating, raping and kidnapping black people

Stevenson got into gangs as a teen. It's a scientific fact that the brain isn't fully matured until 25 years of age in most cases. Teens aren't always able to make logical decisions and can't see 48 hrs ahead. The live in the here and now. We have age of consent laws because teens can't make the decision on whether or not they want to have sex with an adult. There is a reason advertisers go for that under 25 age group and that cigarette companies used to target teens, you can still be swayed. By the time you reach Kovalev's age you are who you are. You're set in your ways and you ain't changing. Stevenson changed the person who he was while he was becoming an adult. He has never gotten in any trouble since leaving prison. With the recidivism rate as high as it is I commend him even more. He made the decision to stop being in gangs, not going back to the old neighborhood, dedicating his life to his sport and becoming a champion. It's a lot easier to get out of prison and go back to doing the only thing you know how to do. Sell drugs and pimp women. The 21 year old Stevenson isn't the same man as the 38 year old Stevenson. With Kovalev's past history I'd venture to guess the 32 year old Kovalev is the same as the 21 year old Kovalev.

Let me say this because I know I come from a different background than most people here. I grew up in Detroit in the late 80's early 90's and it was normal to throw a welcome home from prison party and the next month we're trying to raise money for your defense because you caught another case. Even if Stevenson never became a world champion boxer but was able to stay out of trouble for 17 years that would still be amazing to me.
