Martinez wasn't using Margarito as a stepping stone, it was just a fight that got made. Margarito lost but it was 4 years prior. Martinez wasn't in the position to pick and choose opponents. They got offered good money and they took the fight.

But still the Martinez that was great isn't the same as the 2000 version. Margarito has beaten many fighters better than that version of Martinez.
