Why should a fight for GGG at 154 be for a belt? It's not like he's gonna campaign at that weight.

    just sayin

I think if they fight it will be more like at 155lbs and probably for the WBA belt just to help sell the PPV. GGG Has already said he still wants the money and popularity that comes with fighting Cotto. Personally I think that if Cotto wins on Saturday GGG will approach Cotto with an offer to fight at 157 with the intentions of conceding to a 155 fight with a little extra money coming his way after negotiations are complete. And by the way this contradicts his original stance which was that he didn't care about Cotto that all he wants is the belt.

Just for the sake of being recognized as a 154 champion at one time of his career. I feel that 154 would be hard to make for GGG. At 154 he would need to KO his opponent early or otherwise can run out of gas in later rounds. Which is why Canelo at 154 would be a risky fight to take for GGG. Though probably he can give it a go.

Canelo left the negotiation table when Cotto stopped negotiating. Canelo agreed to everything and Cotto was stalling in lieu of the whole May/Pac show.

After Canelo/Kirkland was signed, there was no issue with Cotto making an offer to get Golovkin out of the way. K2 was still trying to make an offer to Cotto prior to signing the Monroe fight, but Cotto wouldn't even respond. He could've made a catch-weight offer to Gennady with 90-10 split, but he never attempted even that. Cotto was granted a volunatary defense, he could've dictated terms to Golovkin for a July fight, but never attempted and in fact refused to even respond to K2.

Tom Loeffler started off by saying, “Why Willie Monroe? Well 1st, Miguel Cotto wouldn’t accept the challenge. Gennady is his mandatory from the WBC. Part of the agreement was that Cotto would get one voluntary defense before he had to fight Gennady. That fight was supposed to be against Canelo and that fight never happened. The WBC will still give him one voluntary defense and it looks like that will be against Daniel Geale, who Gennady fought last year here, so Willie Monroe made the most sense. He’s fought on ESPN 4 times in the last year; he won the Boxcino Tournament, and he’s from Upstate NY.”

Of course Cotto didn't respond. The Geale fight was his tune up fight for the Canelo fight Which is something that Cotto has stated over & over again. He has in mind the fights that he wants next. Does he share it with anyone? No, he's never been a big media guy himself.

You people are so obsessed with the whole "duckin" scenario as ya call it, that it's hard for ya to take the blinders off.

Guess what.... even with no belt GGG STILL wants a fight with Cotto. All this time, he's been leading ya lil'g fans to believe that all this time all he wanted to do was unify belts

I don't think Golovkin would go to 154 for neither Canelo or Cotto, maybe 157

Funny how Cotto and others have complained about little Manny's catchweights, but they do the same thing.
I don't see a problem if it is a non title fight and a fighters is moving up to fight a heavier opponent.
If you are going to be a champ of a weight class, that should be the limit.
Making your opponent struggle to make a lower weight is a bi ch move, no way around it.
I seem to remember someone saying catchweights didn't count, later he used a 152 catchweight.

No he doesn't have to fight 154 pounders. He just had a good fight. There are lots of good middleweights he can fight and more good ones coming up all the time. It seems like so many on this board don't want a great natural middleweight to fight as 160. Some want him to fight 168 pounders and now some want him to fight 154 pounders. What is wrong with a natural middleweight champion staying at middleweight and defending his title 3 or 4 times a year until he retires. That is what Hagler and Monzon did. Anybody who wanted to fight them had to come up or down to 160 with no catchweights. I don't think anyone ever complained about them doing this and they are both Hall of Famers and all time greats. Why can't GGG do the same thing without this b*tching about it from some fans
