“En este negocio, no siempre se puede llegar a un acuerdo”, dijo Cotto a preguntas sobre el particular. “Entendíamos que era mucho dinero pagar $300,000 adicionales a los $800,000 de (Genady) Golovkin (por concepto de ser el retador obligatorio). Es más de un millón de dólares. Con ese dinero me puedo comprar el campeonato que me dé la gana”.

    Translation:

" Not always in this business agreements can be reached. We understood that paying $300,000 from sanctioning fees on top of $800,000 for step aside to GGG was way too much $$$. It's more than 1m dollars. With that type of money I can buy me whatever belt I feel like getting."- Cotto

" Mientras que la compañía Roc Nation Sports, que representa a Cotto, de 35 años, notificó al CMB que abandonaba su derecho a ser el campeón mundial.

También se ha conocido que Golovkin, monarca interino, por esperar la oportunidad de disputar la pelea para definir al campeón del peso mediano iba a recibir $800,000, aunque ese acuerdo fue entre promotores, sin que el CMB tuviese que participar en el mismo."

    Translation:

Meanwhile, RN who represents Cotto stated that Cotto resign his rights as MW champion.

It has also been known that Golovkin, acting monarch, by waiting for the opportunity to dispute the fight to define the middleweight champion was to receive $ 800,000, although the agreement was between promoters, without the WBC would have to participate in it.

From this, it seems Cotto/RN never paid GGG/R2 team.

Damn, you are hard headed. The fight would of never gotten signed in the first place for the titles without that agreement. If it wasn't paid, Canelo couldn't fight for the title.

I but if the fight w/ Canelo happened and then Cotto refuse to fight GGG, then it validates that step aside agreement..might be wrong..I'm pretty sure there will be litigation on this if Cotto/RN paid that money already.
That agreement is separate, they'd lose in court. Just because he decided to not fulfill his other obligation doesn't mean he can back out of the first deal.

It was a coward move to begin with. He knows if he wins he'd be called on to fight GGG, and that made him piss his pants.

Obviously, a fight with Canelo at this time is far more lucrative than a fight with GGG. Having the belt enhanced Cotto's leverage in negotiations with Canelo (i.e., allowed him to negotiate for more money).

Paying GGG $800,000 to step aside was probably a good business decision for Cotto because the amount Cotto is making fighting Canelo is probably much more than $800,000 greater than he would have made fighting GGG at this time.

The belt was definitely relevant financially...but I get the sense that Cotto has a pretty healthy ego without it too, to the belt's relevance has its limits.
But Canelo says he didn't care about the belt, it was Cotto who wanted it to be part of this fight.

Cotto said the hell it was, FA-Q.

Now why didn't Canelo just do the same thing?

Umm sure, no I did not. I knew he was damaged.

And all I am saying like the PED use, history was made, but it was tainted.

So is Cottos win in the MW division. He never fought at MW, so why does he call himself MW champion.

My point is when ever Cotto is talked about, they should say his last championship never actually happened against a MW at 160. Because he never fought at MW, only lame CW.

And he never fought the true MW champ. He was paper champ. Which taints his fourth title.

Understandable. No reason to pay ridiculous sanctioning fees if he's just going to get stripped two weeks later for not agreeing to face Golovkin. It would be a complete waste of money to pay the sanctioning fees.

What are you saying?? You're saying Cotto is a coward for doing what he's doing to Golovkin but Canelo is gonna do the same thing. So he's a coward to u too right???

C'mon...you expect boxers to be perfectly consistent with every public utterance they make? Even your hero can't live up to that standard.

These are boxers, not Justices of the Supreme Court.

Miguel Cotto, like Floyd Mayweather, has achieved a level of success which allows him to do whatever the hell he wants to do. No other fighter in the world can do that. Every other fighter is beholden to promoters and sanctioning bodies.

Stripping Cotto of his title will not change his level of popularity, the amount of money he makes or his bargaining power.

This move should not surprise anyone. Cotto has said he has 1 more year left in Boxing. Why pay a fee for a belt you already won? History was already made. He still holds the lineal title.

He is at the stage of his career where he can dictate things, he has been through the fire. Cashing out on a risky fight should not be held against him, GGG lovers will never understand this because there fighter does not take the risk Cotto has taken.

Moving up in weight is not a option for lil g or moving down. Those are the biggest challenges for him.

Cotto could have ducked Canelo and taken the Floyd route for this fight. He didn't people that glorify GGG are acting as if Cotto is fighting Andre Berto on Nov 21. He is fight Canelo Alverez a fighter that is better than any fighter GGG has ever faced. Shane Mosley is better than and fighter GGG has ever faced.

Ward waited for GGG, to only get told what Cotto told GGG. He was not worth the money risk. So setting a double standard is pretty funny here.
His promotional company stuck their foot in there mouth by saying he could beat anyone from 154-168, then keep him stagnant at 160.

No one cares what belt is on the line Saturday. It's about 2 warriors going at it. Mexico vs Puerto Rico.

GGG is irrelevant come Saturday night.
If you fight for a belt in a weight class, the you are in that weight class, no backtracking.

Willie Monroe Jr. would destroy Shane Mosley and he'd smack Chotto around the ring all the same, just like Trout did.
