Well, I think by the WBC taking the belt away from Cotto BEFORE the "voluntary defense" which is the nature of the step aside $$$, it defaults the agreement. I but if the fight w/ Canelo happened and then Cotto refuse to fight GGG, then it validates that step aside agreement..might be wrong..I'm pretty sure there will be litigation on this if Cotto/RN paid that money already.

That agreement is separate, they'd lose in court. Just because he decided to not fulfill his other obligation doesn't mean he can back out of the first deal.

It was a coward move to begin with. He knows if he wins he'd be called on to fight GGG, and that made him piss his pants.

Obviously, a fight with Canelo at this time is far more lucrative than a fight with GGG. Having the belt enhanced Cotto's leverage in negotiations with Canelo (i.e., allowed him to negotiate for more money).

Paying GGG $800,000 to step aside was probably a good business decision for Cotto because the amount Cotto is making fighting Canelo is probably much more than $800,000 greater than he would have made fighting GGG at this time.

The belt was definitely relevant financially...but I get the sense that Cotto has a pretty healthy ego without it too, to the belt's relevance has its limits.

But Canelo says he didn't care about the belt, it was Cotto who wanted it to be part of this fight.

Miguel Cotto, like Floyd Mayweather, has achieved a level of success which allows him to do whatever the hell he wants to do. No other fighter in the world can do that. Every other fighter is beholden to promoters and sanctioning bodies.

Stripping Cotto of his title will not change his level of popularity, the amount of money he makes or his bargaining power.

Again for you dumb asses that do not really follow what people say! COTTO HAS NEVER CLAIMED TO BE A TRUEEEEE MIDDLEWIEGHT. Said it in his interview after the Gale fight. This move should not surprise anyone. Cotto has said he has 1 more year left in Boxing. Why pay a fee for a belt you already won? History was already made. He still holds the lineal title.

He is at the stage of his career where he can dictate things, he has been through the fire. Cashing out on a risky fight should not be held against him, GGG lovers will never understand this because there fighter does not take the risk Cotto has taken.

Moving up in weight is not a option for lil g or moving down. Those are the biggest challenges for him.

Cotto could have ducked Canelo and taken the Floyd route for this fight. He didn't people that glorify GGG are acting as if Cotto is fighting Andre Berto on Nov 21.
