It was apparent from Rios's whole demeanor at the weigh-ins and him coming in overweight that his heart wasn't in it anymore. The fact that he didn't just lose but was knocked down and stopped only reassures his decision to retire. Fighters like Rios tend to have short shelf lives so it's no surprise that he decided to hang 'em up sooner rather than later. With that being said, he still managed to make way more money and got a hell of a lot farther in the sport than anyone would have expected, and that alone, is a victory in itself.

Brandons been between a rock and a hard place for a long time; he's not a welterweight, and unlike guys like Pacquiao and Bradley, he isn't athletic or skilled enough to hang in a weight class he isn't made for.
He's just not an athlete. He never was and will never will be the guy that lives a super healthy lifestyle and trains like crazy between fights. And once he entered his late 20s his body started putting on weight faster than before and he couldnt lose it in camp. At 140 and especially 147 he looked fleshy and awkward, even when he was killing himself to make the weight.
It's time for him to retire, and I'm glad Brandon is admitting that to himself fairly early on and getting out. He'll never be able to be competitive at 147, cant make 135 or 140, and is just going to take a beating against top guys. He had a great run, became a world champion, and made a lot of money, what more do you need?
Been fun watching him these past however many years, still have my Team Rios tshirt. **** the haters, Brandon was awesome.
Remember: Rios was just supposed to be some opponent for Anthony Peterson.Last edited by paulf; 11-09-2015, 02:04 AM.

It's Humbling When Reality Sets In, You've NEVER Been More Than A b/c Fighter!
The guy never beat anyone credible ever. His only claim to fame was he beat the b/c level drunk twice, who beat him once. He was behind on scorecards before Chaves got DQ'd, and on the grand stage, he was embarrassed by Paquiao & Bradley. NOW we see why this fool negotiated "hard to get" with Kell Brook, because Brook hits hard, Rios didn't really want that fight, and thought Bradley might be a weaker link to a title, since Bradley isn't known as a heavy puncher. The Rios found out that when you won't train, won't stay in shape, they all hit hard. The bottom line is he's always been just media hype. For fans to talk about his weight, what weight class he should or should not be in, pre-supposes you actually know the guy, and you don't. Just a Mexican fighter with a catching name, who really wasn't that good and along with all his vulgar, trash talking, just got humble pie slammed down his throat. Next.

this is really the only option for him. he may retire for a while, hopefully stay in shape, and come back "better than ever" before getting beat up or outboxed again.
rios is done. when former LW who makes his bacon on being bigger than his opponents and coming forward can not longer make 147 or take big shots / come forward, he's got nothing left.
thanks for the memories. rios made a lot of money and had a solid career. he's making the right call, and i wish im the best.

it's amazing how this sport works. anthony peterson was considered the more talented of the two peterson brothers. bigger puncher, etc. rios was a live dog and a test, but he wasn't supposed to beat him up. i think he essentially made him quit, IIRC? low blows or something similar?
