And, fairly decent against Lara. Kirkland tired him out quickly and I think that was a matter of Canelo not breathing properly when blocking and striking. Got too caught up in the firefight.

From Roach's talk (which is sometimes intentionally misleading) he seems to be planning for Cotto to weather an early storm and then come on strong.
Cotto would be better off starting aggressive. That's his strength, his A game, that's when he looks incredible at times. Canelo to my eyes is the bigger man and could be hard to back up, but we've seen him be happy to box on the back foot in the past, he did it most of the fight against Rhodes. Cotto has some of the best offensive footwork in the sport, he cuts the ring off (whereas Canelo mostly follows in straight lines) and he closes range and picks his shots well. Not saying he has to push Canelo back or try and stalk him, but if he can't apply his usual pressure style then he should keep things centre ring and look to lead rather than counter.
If Cotto comes out looking to box and move, Canelo will probably edge the round(s) with his jab and basic boxing. Cotto would likely waste energy with too much movement whereas Canelo would be in his comfort zone, meaning Canelo would be the one with more in the tank once the fight intensified. Cotto is not great defensively, he's better than some give him credit for but being on the ropes is a bad place for him in any fight and even when he did ok in the middle rounds vs Pac on the back foot, it's not like he was inflicting any damage, setting traps or walking Pac onto anything meaningful.
Aside from the Kirkland fight, Canelo hasn't gone for the kill early on in any of his biggest or most recent fights, and even though his stamina isn't great, he knows it and paces himself for 12 rounds. If Cotto is going to have the stamina edge by the halfway point he shouldn't be basing his gameplan on Canelo being wasteful or over-aggressive.

Has GGG fought 4 times a year his entire career. And GGG isn't exactly a big dude. Some of those fighters you are talking about, presumably, are taller than him, and have naturally bigger frames.
Look at Ward, he fought LHW in Olympics, but came out as a MW, then went pretty quickly SMW.
GGG started as a WW in amateurs. A lot of people don't know that.
Regardless, GGG will soon be fight only two to three times a year. And if the Canelo fight happens, he'll be off for 7 months.
But he can stay in shape. That's what many great fighters do.Last edited by Progrssive_Jedi; 11-06-2015, 05:47 PM.
