I think that was also part of Kovlev's issue he hurt Ward early and figured he could force it again. Then when it didn't and the fight was slipping away it was already too late for him as Ward had took control.

^Very much so. I saw that exact same thing and when he finally decided to put his foot back on the gas, the punches weren't there for him. Punches that were lighting up Ward in the first 3 were now just grazing him as he slipped away... and the fight slipped away...
