Kovalev easily wins. Only Toney's great chin saves him from being KOed.

True. Toneys defense was overrated. He got hit quite a bit and had a tendency to be too flat footed. Kovalev beats him in a similar fashion to the way he beat Hopkins. Toney doesn't get KO'd but he gets dominated from start to finish.

A more interesting match up would be 1999 Roy Jones vs today's Kovalev.

knockouts predictions either way can be ignored....
cmon, kovalev aint knocking out jt and not vice versa either...
decision one way or the other. its too hard to say for me til u see their game plans.... but jt does have the tendency to be flatfooted at times..

Hopkins was 50 years old and doesn't fight like Toney in my opinion. Overall it's hard to say. If Toney is motivated and training properly I'd give him a chance against anyone. Hard to vote against a fighter who toward the latter portion of his hardly ever trained (conventionally) yet was still able to contend with live HW's. Not really sure how the fight would play out.....

I don't think James Toney was that good in 1995, he was lazy and inconsistent, he lost to less than stellar opponents or faced off against some very mediocre fighters. Kovalev currently, could be the best light heavyweight around and the best of the decade. Post Jones, it would take Toney years and years to rebuild to becoming a true championship quality fighter and he never once did that at LHW.

So, I think it's a horrible mess up. Lazy, bad stamina Toney gets eaten up by Kovalev, probably not stopped but badly beaten across 12 rounds.

That would be a great fight. Toney was too inconsistent to count on at light heavyweight, I'd pick Kovalev. If Toney showed up, though, it's a FOTY that Toney might stop Kovalev in.
