The round Margarito was arguably getting pummeled the most in and pushed around just so happen to be his best?

This was how Cotto looked after the 2nd fight with Margarito:

Hardly a stroll in the park...

Keep in mind this was against a Margarito who had come off two devastating losses since their first encounter to Mosley and Pacquiao, the latter fight almost ending his career due to an eye injury. Margarito had been out of the ring for a year. Yet in the final round, before the fight was stopped, Margarito had his best round of the fight and looked to be coming on.

IMO Margarito was always a bad style matchup for Cotto and I think Cotto realizes it too. He can come up with excuses about loaded gloves all he wants, but the rematch had enough evidence that a faded Margarito was able to damage Cotto pretty badly, to prove otherwise.

Bert Sugar, before the first Cotto-Margarito fight, predicted that Margarito would stop Cotto with uppercuts late in the fight. He obviously saw a technical flaw in Cotto's game.

To get caught cheating will always tarnish your reputation. So I feel Cotto with the whole not to Forgive or Forget type attitude.

And this is Cotto from just a couple of rounds against Geale:

Since the first Margarito fight - his face now swells up just by looking at it. It's hardly an indication of how well or bad they've gone. In the 9th, Margarito was getting pushed around and bodied - where is this myth coming from that Margarito was doing anything substantive?

He threw nearly a 100 punches yet still was outlanded by Cotto in that round...

Margarito was not getting into a rhythm at the end of that fight. The only difference in that round was that Cotto landed some very hard shots. In other words, he exchanged a bit more. If you call that a rhythm, then I don't know what you're talking about. A rhythm suggests that Margarito was having success, which he was not. Just because Cotto was exchanging a bit more does not mean Margarito was landing. It's merely smart boxing on Cotto's part, to the point of opening up his arsenal.

As to a trilogy, there's no point to it. As Lampley and Kellerman said, the fight path itself was similar to the first match. What WAS different is the effect Margarito's punches had on Cotto. Instead of being beaten down, Cotto looked stable and beat Margarito to the punch every time. That's all there is to this match-up. Clearer evidence wouldn't be possible unless we had videotaped proof of Margarito talking about using plaster. If a fight is basically the same, yet the damage one fighter does to another isn't, something's up there. Punching power doesn't change overnight.

With that being said, let's not pretend that Margarito has no power to begin with. Using loaded wraps does not automatically mean a man is weak. All it makes clear is that the user is willing to kill someone to obtain victory--using a deadly weapon. Margarito is still a strong man, hence claiming that Cotto had some bruises on his face means nothing. Margarito was able to hurt Pacquiao various times without wraps, so there you go. Plus, if you compare the damage of the first fight and the second, you'd have to be blind not to see a difference.

The fact that he threw 100 punches is a better indication that he was turning it on than punches landed. to throw that many punches in the 9th round of a fight is pretty remarkable. Cotto was the more accurate puncher, and the better boxer but Tony was turning it on and Cotto was starting to get busted even more.

It's just a bad matchup for him.

Cotto already corrected a lot ot the mistakes he did in the first fight. Only way Margarito has a chance to win is if Cotto gets his ass kicked hard by Canelo and not in NY.

It's funny seeing people go outta their way to excuse this cheater. People act as if Brother Naazim just stumbled upon Margarito loaded gloves. Brother Naazim explained that he had seen things from Margarito's previous fights that made his su****ious. Things that boxers are taught never to do, like hitting on the top of the head. You'll break your hands. Once a cheater always a cheater. Margarito is a proven cheater and should never be let back into the sport.
