  • What Fighters Would Have Never Been Champions?

If this whole time, boxing only had one world champion with eight weight classes, which fighters would be least likely to have ever become a champion?

Obviously this could be a huge list.

With the extra divisions gone, it really gets limiting.

I don't think Carlos Quintana would have ever been a champion. He only won the WBO version and made zero defenses.

I honestly don't think Sven Ottke would have ever won a title either, much less defended one.

Eddie Hopson would have never got a title either.

I think Trinidad would have been a champion for sure, but he wouldn't have gotten such an easy title win in a shot Maurice Blocker. Instead he might have had to face Ike Quartey which was a dream match up.

I don't see Michael Bentt becoming heavyweight champion either. Morrison probably wouldn't but I wouldn't count him out.

John Ruiz definitely would have never got there without multiple titles.

Okay so we need to get working on a huge list then to do this lol

    Carlos Cuenca
    Pauli Malinaggi
    Kell Brook
    Jamie McDonnell
James Toney (say what you want but when he faced the best of his division he ALWAYS lost)

This list as you said it really could go on and on but those were just a random spurt of guys that came to mind.

Too many to name. Majority of fighters wouldn't have been champion. Most current champs would just be contenders right now.

        LOL.

        Yes.

It's going to be giant the more I think about it.

I have to add Trevor Berbick, Francesco Damiani, Tim Whitherspoon, Herbie Hide and Bruce Seldon to this list as well.

If we eliminated all the cruiserweight champions, there might be a whisper of protest but let's face it, not much. It's always been the stepping stone to a real future at heavyweight.

This does make Hopkins look great since I have no doubt he would be champion at middleweight and light heavyweight.

It's a strong possibility Shannon Briggs wouldn't have made it either. In fact, I'd say it's as good as a fact.

This is true. I think it would make the sport much better and would it ever glorify the title!

The champion could walk to the ring in total splendor, unlike today where he carries four or five trinkets with him.

Does Broner beat Abril, Rios, Garcia, Manny, Floyd, or Postol? Doubt he could beat any of those guys.

Even one title per weight class in 17 weight classes would be great. Forget about 8 weight classes, that is a little primitive. I think it would eliminate a lot of aspiring boxers. But yeah the "He's a champion" "He's a former champion though", "He's won titles" to justify why a fighter is good rather than who he has actually beaten, despite the fact that he won that title against a no-hoper, would be less of a problem.

I mean Cotto won a major vacant WW title against Michael Jennings. And this is very common, it happens all the time good fighters getting major title shots against no hopers instead of against other good fighters.

I don't see Ricky Hatton getting there either. He did some fine work at 140, but almost nothing at 147. He would have a shot at 135 probably.

I don't see Luis Collazo ever winning the title either, although he would have provided a decent defense for the champion.

Rafael Ruelas wouldn't have made it either. A quick IBF reign at lightweight where he nearly lost to Freddie Pendleton followed by meager opponents until getting starched against De La Hoya.

One interesting match-up that would've happened most likely in the '90s would be Calzaghe and Hopkins since Calzaghe would probably choose to fight at middleweight instead of light heavyweight. That would be a tough one to call, but way more exciting that the fight they actually did put on.

8 might be primitive, but come on. 17 is ludicrous. Look at those lower weights. Cut out strawweight and junior flyweight and just have 112 pound limit. If you don't weight 112 pounds, why do you even want to box?

Super flyweight- 115 up from 112? Come on now. Another one gone.

Junior featherweight- 122 from 118 and down from 126? I'd drop that one, too.

Junior Lightweight- 130 between 126 and 135? Gone.

My idea was heavyweight- 200 and up. Light heavyweight- 185-199. Super Middleweight- 170-184. Middleweight- 160-169. Welterweight- 150- 159. Lightweight- 140-149. Featherweight- 130-139. Bantamweight- 120-129. Flyweight- 110- 119. 9 divisions. Very simple to keep up with.
