Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemiuex Does Roughly 150,000 PPV Buys

If you're a boxing fan, this is excellent and I'll tell you why:
1. They tried to sell us 2 mismatches on PPV in consecutive months, they both flopped because these aren't the fights we want to see.
2. HBO is trying to build a model of cheap fighters and good ratings. This sends the message that we want better matchups. Relevant fights between the best fighters in the sport.
3. The PPV model needs to die. Boxers like GGG deserve more exposure and should be on national television in front of multi-millions of households.
I hope this sends a message that we want more.

I observed before the fight it was sort of a glorified regular HBO card but I don't regret buying it as I saw two stellar perfomances and have yet to watch the Mayweather Berto replay for free. (I thought he was supposed to score a KO vs Berto??)Last edited by TheStranger; 10-20-2015, 07:31 PM.

I just don't see it. Prior to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, no one was doing 1M+ buys anymore. Canelo hasn't come close on his own. Cotto hasn't come close either. Pacquiao and Mayweather no longer do those numbers alone. Canelo vs. Cotto will be fortunate to hit 1M. And if the fight doesn't hit 1M, it's pretty much the nail in the coffin that the 1M buy days are over.Originally posted by Eff Pandas View PostYou know who they are. But does it matter?
Assuming Canelo wins next month as expected & does 800k+ numbers he's gonna be that next PPV guy to connect his PPV era to the Floyd/Manny PPV era (2008-2015) to the Oscar PPV era (2002-2007) to the Lewis/Tyson/Holyfied PPV era (1988-2002).
And assuming Canelo wins, then what? Who's going to be his next big dance partner to make an attempt @ 1M outside of GGG?Last edited by radioraheem; 10-20-2015, 07:32 PM.

I was expecting 200K. 150K is roughly 40% of what Manny drew against Rios and Mayweather against Berto.
I wouldn't call it a failure but not a success either. If he's doing 150K buys in his first PPV, that should still set up up to be a decent PPV fighter (like Cotto being 3rd behind Mayweather and Pacquiao).
I remember Manny Pacquiao doing 200K views with David Diaz in 2008.

Or, put Ward vs GGG on PPV and let the 350K-400K hardcore fight fans have an epic night. Instead of Gennady trying to act like he's Floyd and factoring in a casual fanbase that doesn't exist as a reason to avoid the fight most of the people who actually give a **** about him wanna see. Because clearly, he hasn't crossed over. Hell, according to these numbers, he doesn't have the stranglehold on the hardcore community that he thought he did.Originally posted by Barcham View PostSo let's put Ward vs Aussie kangaroo on PPV and see how it does. Not as co main event to Cotto, all on it's own. ****ing idiot.

best comment on the issue so farOriginally posted by Eff Pandas View PostThats nuts. From 1988-2006 (19yrs) there had been 11 PPV's that had 1M+ buys & none that did 2M+. From 2007-2015 (9yrs) there have been 14 PPV's that had 1M+ buys, 3 that did 2M+ buys & 1 that did 4M+ buys. If you put on competitive fights they will come, if you don't they won't.
There is zero evidence people won't buy PPV to see perceived competitive fights between top fighters. When you try to put one over on the public you tend to feel that in your PPV numbers.
