If you think about it thought two non American fighters neither of them being Latino did 150,000 on PPV on HBO is pretty successful don't you think.

Interesting thought. The only fight I see that would qualify as a non-American fight without a Latino among notable PPV's is Vitali Klitschko vs Danny Williams & they did 120k buys.

I definitely am of the opinion you can't really see this as a failure despite other notable fighters first jump into PPV or K2's own expectations of what success was.

Or, put Ward vs GGG on PPV and let the 350K-400K hardcore fight fans have an epic night. Instead of Gennady trying to act like he's Floyd and factoring in a casual fanbase that doesn't exist as a reason to avoid the fight most of the people who actually give a **** about him wanna see. Because clearly, he hasn't crossed over. Hell, according to these numbers, he doesn't have the stranglehold on the hardcore community that he thought he did.

Thats nuts. From 1988-2006 (19yrs) there had been 11 PPV's that had 1M+ buys & none that did 2M+. From 2007-2015 (9yrs) there have been 14 PPV's that had 1M+ buys, 3 that did 2M+ buys & 1 that did 4M+ buys. If you put on competitive fights they will come, if you don't they won't.

There is zero evidence people won't buy PPV to see perceived competitive fights between top fighters. When you try to put one over on the public you tend to feel that in your PPV numbers.

I just don't see it. Prior to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, no one was doing 1M+ buys anymore. Canelo hasn't come close on his own. Cotto hasn't come close either. Pacquiao and Mayweather no longer do those numbers alone. Canelo vs. Cotto will be fortunate to hit 1M. And if the fight doesn't hit 1M, it's pretty much the nail in the coffin that the 1M buy days are over.

And assuming Canelo wins, then what? Who's going to be his next big dance partner to make an attempt @ 1M outside of GGG?

Yeah no upside on the backend of this show for sure....got his feet wet and it proved he needs a great B side even as popular as he is right now..Canelo is that guy IMO.

Wrong, GGG would be Canelo's B-side. I'm a Cotto fan but I believe Canelo is the one with the biggest following today of course without Pac in the mix.

If you're a boxing fan, this is excellent and I'll tell you why:

1. They tried to sell us 2 mismatches on PPV in consecutive months, they both flopped because these aren't the fights we want to see.

2. HBO is trying to build a model of cheap fighters and good ratings. This sends the message that we want better matchups. Relevant fights between the best fighters in the sport.

3. The PPV model needs to die. Boxers like GGG deserve more exposure and should be on national television in front of multi-millions of households.

I hope this sends a message that we want more.

The model is fine, even though I don't like it. If you wanna be a PPV star, you have to prove yourself legit. People can say what they want about Floyd, he paid his dues. Manny paid his dues. Even though not crossover megastars, Cotto and Canelo paid their dues. Oscar kinda had a silver spoon coming out. But, he didn't abuse it. He fought legit comp. GGG's resume is at best equal to the pre-Maidana Broner. And it can easily be argued that at that point Broner had a better resume. And he was gonna try snd BS the public and do the Chino fight on PPV. But SHO stepped in and spared him the out of the ring embarrassment that those numbers would have been. You're absolutely right. This should be a lesson learned. There has to be some substance there to be a star. And when you're 33yrs old and a decade long pro. And you're supposed coming out party is againsta bum like Lemieux, the majority is gonna call BS.
