Hopkins was very fortunate to have superstar welterweights that eventually came up to fight him. He's also a genetic freak thay was able to fight at a very high level well into his 40s. Doubt GGG will have those type of stars line up for him. So if he wants to waste what's left of his prime years fighting C level opponents for meaningless paper trinkets, more power to him.

When GGG said they offered Ward a fight, Ward never denied it. Ward had excuses, legal ones. Not even claiming they were not legit, but truth is, when GGG didn't have big fights, Ward wasn't an option.

        Ward wanted tune up.

The catch weight wasn't an offer to Ward, it was a discussion with Dan. So I'm not gonna count that.

Ward did send an email with a contract to fight fall of next year, after each fought once.

According to Ward's team, that would allow the Lemieux. Not so surprisingly, it would of meant skipping out on the mandated fight with winner of Cotto/Canelo.

Why you can't see that is beyond me.

Both sides have admitted to these facts. Team GGG said they had other plans, like fight the winner of Cotto/Canelo. That they felt the path to MW unification is the better option for GGG.

You don't like it, but that's not a duck. It's doing what better for your fighter. Unlike Cotto, GGG isn't holding a lineal MW title Hostage. If GGG had a SMW belt that Ward was in line for, it'd be different.

So even if Wards team hadn't known about Lemieux, they knew GGG was facing Cotto/Canelo winner, and they knew he'd fight this year

It's not hard to see that their endgame was to disrupt Cotto mandatory in case he got past Canelo.

Not to mention the simple fact why GGG would sign a 50/50 contract to fight Ward in a year is beyond logic.

GGG would have to be ****** to give up his bargaining power by signing a year in advance. Not to mention giving up his path to MW unification

You may think that isn't a great thing, but since there were 4 belts, it's been done twice.
Do tou ever get tired of writing different variations of the same ole, long winded post???

canelo and cotto are his tito and oscar. let's just hope that canelo and cotto have the balls that tito and oscar did. if all goes according to plan and there's no more bull**** from the wbc, golovkin could potentially be unified by september next year, and then we can start talking seriously about a move to 168 if there's still a reason to. i mean, the contract that ward offered to golovkin was supposedly for the end of 2016 anyway

Would love to see GGG unify all the titles. Nowhere to go but him, lets see who the real challenge is.

Hopkins wasn't really seen as a huge threat to Tito. He was a very good fighter, that was getting old. Tito was supposed to beat him, then go on to fight Roy Jones.

GGG is a big favorite over whomever wins the Cotto-Canelo fight. So if there is a better option out there for either, they're likely to take it. The worst case scenario for GGG would be Cotto-Canelo being competitive and entertaining. Because a rematch would be more profitable than a GGG fight. Especially if GGG's PPV isn't a huge success.

I'm glad that this is the goal for team Golovkin. It's well within reach and Cotto/Alvarez won't be able to escape the demand for the big unification fight if everything pans out.

Good points but there will be a tremendous amount of pressure for the winner of the Cotto-Canelo winner to fight GGG, and the potential for incredible backlash if they don't. Regardless if GGG sells 200k, 300k, or 350k for his PPV he will come out of it as a bigger star that is on the rise. He already is the most talked about boxer among boxing fans and that is only going to grow. There is a good chance that by the time canelo or cotto is ready to fight again, GGG will have 3 belts in the division with a WBC mandatory due (which has already been delayed) against canelo/cotto. I know the WBC changes their rules and makes exceptions all the time, but they have been strong about GGG being next for cotto/canelo and I think they backed themselves into a corner and could be easily sued by K2/Golovkin if they allow another exception.

Historically, it would look really bad if Cotto/Canelo duck GGG with a chance to be the undisputed champion of the division with all 4 major belts (5 if you include GGG's IBO belt) and the fan backlash would be intense.

I also think that either guy could possibly make more money against GGG than against each other in a rematch. GGG may be willing to take a lower split of the revenue.

Things are going to be very interesting in the next few months.
