Comments Thread For: Roach Confident Seven Week Camp is Enough For Cotto

Miguel Cotto, who faces Saul Alvarez on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay, is now at the stage of his training camp at the Wild Card Boxing Club with Freddie Roach where he has begun sparring. By the time Cotto faces 'Canelo' he will have spent approximately seven weeks in preparation for this fight with his trainer. Some question if that's enough time to get ready for an event of his caliber.

I agree, eight or more is overkill.

Whats funny is, typically the older fighter should have the long training camp (around 10-12weeks max) and the younger fighter should be at about 8 but its the opposite between the 2. We may have a hug fest if it goes past 10...

Completely agree. He'll be the fresher fighter come fight night, and it is something that has worked and showed for him since he's been with Roach. Canelo will leave it all in the gym, part of the youth inexperience and crap corner. He'll be fatigued within 3-4 rounds.

It is easy for Cotto to make the weight so 7 weeks should be enough.
A fighter who gains much weight and has a hard time to make the weight should take a longer camp though. Thats why Canelo started earlier for good reason.

Doesn't matter how much time Cotto trains his downfall will be his chin. Hell Mayweather stunned him bad and he never does that unless he is fighting guys moving up in weight like Marquez and Hatton. Beating the likes of a shot Martinez and 2 bums in Rodriguez and that Aussie fruit can give you confidence I get it but people act like he beat three good fighters when in fact he beat 3 guys who were on their way out or never has beens. Once Canelo lands clean and consistently it's over, he is going to be looking like the toxic avenger like he did after Margarito and Pac got done with him.

Not sure about this. Im a hardcore Cotto fan and I would like to see a 10 week camp, 2 to break the ice, get back into the routine, 6 really hard and 2 to peak/maintain.

In this case, Cotto is pretty much in weight but unless he was doing some serious endurance/cardio I dont know where he stands with his conditioning...we will find out soon.....

                  This....

History has shown us all too often that fighter's who blow up too much in between fights often spend more time training to make weight as supposeto training for the fight itself. I am happy to see this is not the case for Cotto.

Both guys are top pros, they will be in excellent fighting shape. I am really looking forward to this fight, it could be fight of the decade!
