Exactly. I don't know where this misconception comes from that Matthysse is hugely popular, a big star and over-hyped like crazy. He's none of these things.

He has some fans on NSB but it's not even that many. I guess the few diehard ones speak the loudest and it leaves an impression. But to me he's never seemed that popular in the boxing world.

Yeah, I think his fans just get the sense that he's had two shots at moving into the upper echelon, and he's failed to deliver in both.
No one except for a psychopath would fault a professional boxer for staying down while not being able to see after feeling your eye pop. Just the description alone sounds horrifying. Throw in the dizziness, ears ringing, AND crowd roaring. I bet that is scary as ****.
You have people like gatti & marg who'd push through, but those dudes were just maniacs.
