Its so strange that after being a boxing fan for around 20 years, and having watched many of Ali's fights and knowing all about why is became such a legend, its only now, in the last month that i really started to appreciate what an amazing talent and human being he is.

I was never his biggest fan and felt much of the Ali worship was down to people just being fans of his back when he was fighting.
But watching him recently it for some reason hit me. Maybe its comparing boxers of today with him. Maybe it was Floyd claiming to be the best ever that started it off. But it really is true, that no one else compares to Ali. He had a weird magic and majesty to him. I dont agree with some of what he said and his attitude, but still find myself inspired and in awe.

I have never and will never watch his fights against Holmes and Berbick.

Great read. It really was tragic that this fight was ever allowed to proceed. We can't ever know the true affect of this fight individually but we can say for sure that this fight should not have been sanctioned.

Clay was a puppet for those fanatics and Clay got what he deserved a life time of misery and shaking in a withered body with little help from alla babba dabba doo.
This ought to be the kind of thing that merits a ban.

What he did in the ring is historic. The man had near death experience in the 3rd Frazier fight. He fought on a global stage, not afraid to fight away from home. And for the lives he touched outside the ring, the stories are never ending. The machismo he had so far past his prime he still climbed in with Holmes & Berbick, and not for money reasons; Ali was one of few who kept his money. He's the greatest ATHLETE of all time.

It's remarkable to look back and see how he beat pretty much everyone who mattered over the best two decades in heavyweight history. He has two wins in Liston and Foreman where people seriously thought he might get killed. Foreman is arguably the best win ever.

Ali was something really, really special.

You're so full of ****! Do you just make this crap up, throw it against the wall to see what sticks??? Holmes was a long time sparring partner of Ali's. Ali was his mentor, he always looked up to Ali and calls him the greatest of all time. Holmes is on record of saying he never wanted to fight Ali in the ring, his idol, who Larry said was a no-win situation for him because Ali was so far past his prime. Holmes never wanted that fight but they kept throwing more and more money at him to make the fight happen. You're a real phukkin' idiot.

I'm not a fan of Fitzsimmons but he is spot on here and I have long maintained that Dundee held the key to this mockery of a "fight". He should have walked away from Ali's camp the moment he saw Ali couldn't even climb into the sparring ring unassisted. He should have shouted, hollered at any newsman around that Ali was not ready and would never be. Dundee wasn't just Ali's biggest in ring adviser, he was someone who the media could turn to for info.

I respect Pecheco, who told Ali flat out to not fight beyond 1975/6 and Ali never listened, so he walked. Imagine if Dundee and Bundini and Wali and co all walked away, what would Ali have done then? He wouldn't have a manager or a coach or anyone. Plus, it would have merited journalistic investigations. What also startles me is that NO ONE in Ali's team knew that he was taking thyroid medications. That is beyond me and I simply do not believe it.

This was a tragedy and a sad, disturbing end to boxing's most glittering career.

I disagree with you saying that Ali was a draft dodger. A draft dodger is someone who either runs away, or uses their political ties and/or rich parents to avoid the draft as George W. Bush did. Ali simply refused to register. Many protested the Viet Nam war, because it wasn't our fight, and guess what? After fighting for 9 years and dropping more bombs on Viet Nam than were dropped in all of Europe during WWII, we gave up and left. I don't blame Ali for refusing to fight in that pointless war.
