I had a feeling something like this might happen when I saw how tense Wlad looked during that last face-off with Fury.

Then Fury suddenly changed from angry young man to big friendly giant, shook Wlad warmly by the hand and wished him the best lof luck!

I'm sure that surprised Wlad more than the Batman antics, and Wlad doesn't like surprises. He likes to be the man in control.

Fury got very depressed and even announced his retirement after Haye bailed on him the second time.

Imo, this is a ploy by Wlad to unsettle Fury and take control of the situation.
