  • Comments Thread For: Ugly Mismatches Going In, But Coming Out…

By Cliff Rold - Boxing followers can only respond to what’s on paper. Sometimes, the conventional thinking that forms around certain fights is wrong.

Jack Johnson-James Jeffries and Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao are examples of battles hyped in their time as the “Fight of the Century” that turned out to be duds of the day. Donald Curry-Lloyd Honeyghan and Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas were just stops along the way to the possibilities of Curry-Marvin Hagler and Tyson-Evander Holyfield until they weren’t.

Not every great match made turns out to be.

Not every perceived mismatch really is.

This Saturday, we have two perceived mismatches on tap. At Heavyweight (NBC, 8:30 PM EST/5:30 PM PST), Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KO) will defend his WBC belt for the second time against Johann Duhaupas (32-2, 20 KO). At Flyweight (BeIn Espanol, 11 PM EST/8 PM PST), WBA/WBO titlist Juan Francisco Estrada (32-2, 23 KO) will attempt his fifth title defense against former WBA titlist Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (39-5-1, 28 KO).

    On paper, these look ugly.

Even hardcore boxing people scratched their heads wondering who Duhaupas was when the fight was announced. Somehow, the WBC rates Duhaupas eleventh. It’s remarkable considering there doesn’t appear to be anyone in the current top-forty he’s beaten. If a name was overlooked, they are well down the list.

The high WBC rating of Duhaupas should shock no one. Prior to his title win over Bermane Stiverne, this author noted:

Deontay Wilder has risen through the ratings of the WBC by sheer numbers. A check of the most current WBC ratings at Heavyweight show that Wilder is undefeated against their top forty Heavyweights. [Click Here To Read More]

Good read. Have to pretty much agree that Duhaupas & Marquez are rated unfortunately high and should lose their fights decisively.

The WBC are flexible with their ratings, it all depends on how popular the fighter is. Forinstance, Khan was rated #1 WBC without having a single fight in the division..after he pulled out of the Alexander bout the WBC rated him not long after. The WBC will push for whats in their best interests..not the sports. The sport is in a sad sad state.

Im curious to know why these articles only pop up when it comes to certain fighters. What was James Kirkland ranking when he fought Canelo? Did y'all write an article about that? That fight was hyped around here.

Buster wasn't even a bad or unknown fighter. Tyson's image was just so artificially inflated that NOBODY was supposed to beat him.

I don't see why people are still calling stay-busy/squash matches potential Buster Douglas moments...

If Doppoapbehs beat Wilder it would be a guy nobody's heard of beating a guy a few people have heard of. A lil different.

Sorry to nitpick, article is otherwise good

At least James Kirkland is / was a well known fighter who fought quiet a few known fighters, unlike Wilder who is a WBC world champion and fought all lot of unknown guys, myself never heard of this French guy he is fighting. Kirkland was supposed to give Canelo a tougher fight as he was always dubbed as the southpaw Mike Tyson.

I am not saying that Wilder is not a great fighter because he is, he is a late starter and fought in the Olympics after a few fights and won the bronze medal, but his level of competition needs to start to raise a bit faster than this and for people to respect him more.

When was the last time you heard of a great well known French boxer? the last one I heard was Georges Carpentier, again I am not saying there aren't any great French fighters but not well known with the public.

Respectfully, statements like this basically prove THEFRESHBRAWLER's point.

Other than wearing black trunks, any comparison of Kirkland with Tyson in ANY way is the definition of 'hype'.

He also tried to emulate Tyson's fighting style, shame he did not emulate his defence style

the sanctioning bodies are the biggest crooks in boxing. at least with promoters they're just doing their job: trying to sell a product. the sanctioning bodies on the other hand are supposed to represent the interests of the sport, but instead they just use their power to fill their pockets

When you think of mismatches you think of Haymon/PBC.
