Not sure why that would matter since he wasn't fighting for a title? After the Tapia win, most had him somewhere around the bottom of the top ten at 154. Going into Canelo, I saw it as potentially exciting but with Kirkland likely not to make it deep enough into the fight to have a chance. That turned out to be the case. It was a MUCH better fight on paper than either of these, if as predictable.

I don't see why people are still calling stay-busy/squash matches potential Buster Douglas moments...

If Doppoapbehs beat Wilder it would be a guy nobody's heard of beating a guy a few people have heard of. A lil different.

Sorry to nitpick, article is otherwise good
Fair point. Mine was just that sometimes conventional thinking is dead wrong and asking if that could be the case for either fight here.

    And thanks.

I also think of several of the better doubleheaders this year, some good bantamweight scraps, and two FOTY candidates on Haymon cards or related cards (Glowacki-Huck and Salido-Martinez II). HBO has had some good stuff this year. They also had Kovalev-Mohammedi and I think GGG-Lemieux is more Canelo-Kirkland redux than OMG main.

Not sure what your point is getting at but I write about a wide swath of fights. Some aren't that good going in. These are the two biggest mains of the weekend. Just being honest on what they appear to be. As noted, not sure Wilder is proven enough to consider this a mismatch but I think he's good enough to make that guess. Estrada-Marquez is potentially dangerous on recent form of the challenger.

Whats the point of following sports if all you are gonna do is say how much it sucks.

I agree and I try to point out as many positives as possible. Far from a deep cynic. This is an opinion piece. Be lying to say these look good.

Hopefully Gonzalez shines vs Viloria so HBO can get on board and get the rematch done.
To be fair, that was a late replacement foe in Estrada's last.

The one thing that worries me is the fact that Estrada's worst performances have happened in his own soil and home turf. It seems like he either gets too comfortable or he tries too hard to put on a show for his fans. Granted, both men are from the same state, so I think there's more pressure on Estrada than some of his previous fights.

Estrada was even ridiculed by the commentators when he was facing a journeyman by the name of German Meraz. He had an atrocious fight against a crafty southpaw in Alvarez and his Mepranum win was quite underwhelming. All of which happened either in his backyard or in his native state. Estrada must be careful because regardless of how limited Tyson may be, I'm sure he has a chip on his shoulder and would love to burn Estrada out to re establish himself in the division. Also, he does have tremendous power.

Cliff Rold is one of the better journalists around today. A little too obsessed with the lower weight classes, but I make it a point to read all his articles.

While I don't think his opposition is his fault(thats up to his promotion and would likely have to travel for some of the bigger guys. Something he's already had to do plenty of times before earning his titles.) The main problem I have with his opposition is that at least if he fights, and ultimately loses to, someone like Donnie Nietes, at least he lost to a streaking flyweight in great form in more than likely a competitive fight. But if he loses to someone like Tyson, I think he will more than likely be ruined.
I don't blame him because Roman has been doing even worse ****, but I'm not going to pretend its not disappointing.
