I suppose he should have gone out like Ali? Or Holyfield? Or Roy Jones? All the guys who held on for far too long and can now barely speak? They didn't know when their time was up and started losing to mediocre guys; or took brutal beating against great ones (hello Ali vs. Holmes).

Mayweather knew he didn't need it anymore, and didn't want to be remembered as a guy who held on for too long. Fans - myself included - want him to keep fighting just to watch him reach that point where he gets beat so we can laugh as though we've won something. I'm glad he didn't do that. As if that would somehow prove he's a fraud.

I suppose the dream is to finish like Marciano, who KO'd his last opponent, but not everyone is engineered that way.
    Excellent post

I feel Mayweathers career unraveled days before his final fight when the news of the iv leaked. That with the poor quality opponent, his career went out "A Whiner with A Whimper"

His "retirement" rings like a premature fade to an ambitious, unfinished symphony. 50 is a number he will have to compose sooner or later. The FMJ we have come to know could not live peacefully without it.

I wonder at times what some fans want from the sport and what they perceive it to be? Is boxing hit and not get hit, or is it bleed for your fans and hope you have enough scruples left at the end of your career to have a good life? Did some fans want Floyd to fight someone they think could beat him, like, hmmmmmm say Pacquiao? If Floyd intends to truly "retire" maybe its in his best interests to let this current crop of fighters develop without taking a loss to him, which might net him a few more PPV numbers right now, but would he be risking an even bigger payday down the road? There is a "risk reward ratio" for a guy at his level. Would it be better for Floyd to wax a flunky (Berto), let the current crop of lions battle it out and then finally fight the most lucrative "last man standing?"
