Of course people will give a damn if Golovkin unifies the MW division. It will make one of the stars of boxing, and probably of sport in general.

Unifying a mw division that's one of weakest in boxing will bring attention to him that he hasn't gotten yet which is his opposition he fought will be weakest, Lemieux will be only fighter you can say is a B fighter and that's being generous, critics going come out and break down his record,who he fought etc and start asking why a 34 year old fighter wasting his time unifying in a weak division when it's better names at 168 not including ward

Obviously unifying a division makes you more popular, but there is no guarantee of anything making you a star. Andre Ward's not a star, he's perhaps less popular than Kovalev as justified by his 320k tv rating and a comp'd out half-filled arena in his last fight.

How hard is Ward really trying to make this fight? He sent the offer after Lemieux/Golovkin was announced? He made it at 50/50 when Golovkin is the one who has to give up a weight advantage? When Hopkins wanted Dela Hoya & Trinidad he took whatever terms he could get and offered to come in at 157lbs. Same with Hagler for Leonard. If a bigger man really wants a smaller man to move up so bad, he'll do what it takes.
