As long as Canelo and his camp were sharp enough to insist that Canelo Promotions is the lead party in any partnership with a promoter, it doesn't honestly matter who he chooses to work with.

Canelo's last PPV fight, where he was the star against an opponent, saw Canelo Promotions allegedly keep 85% of the take off of the US PPV revenue, plus keep the Mexico TV money to themselves (have no doubt that he also took home a decent piece off of the live gate).

As long as that stays the same, with the continued leverage of Canelo being able to take the fights that he wants (regardless of what Golden Boy would like to do), I see no problem with keeping Oscar as his promoter of choice.

Saul 'Canelo" Alvarez is only 25 years old, and California law (in the state where Golden Boy Promotions is incorporated) doesn't allow for perpetual contracts, with unease over contract that even extend ten years.

Canelo/Eddie/Chepo already have a functioning promotional company in Mexico (regularly putting on their own shows), have a direct deal with HBO (that was for Canelo, and not to work with Golden Boy), and has shown himself to be a strong live draw in Texas/California/Nevada.

In due time, it will no longer make sense for Alvarez to trumpet the Golden Boy banner, in lieu of his own Canelo Promotions banner.

Oscar is putting his foot in his mouth again.

Wait so allegedly GBP is only getting 15% of the Canelo side of the US PPV money & zilch of the Mexican TV money? Am I understanding that right? Where is this info from?

**** if this is true guess I can't blame Canelo for sticking with GBP, but that seems like a cherry ass deal & maybe Arum is right (in the previously posted article from 2011) that Oscar is a dumb mfer.

Agreed. Love his 'fight anyone' mentality

for sure but i wonder if that before or after the promoters cut. got to think this contract he is signing now is more beneficial to canelo anyway he could of asked for anything and oscar would of had no choice but to allow it

Unless things changed since when Schaefer was in the company, that was apparently the split that he picked up off of the Alvarez-Angulo PPV (there was a slight bit of hysteria when it was reported that Canelo was only guaranteed $1.5m for the fight, which Schaefer had to explain to "put out the fire"; can't find a link at the moment).

Because, at this point in his career, what does Golden Boy actually offer for Canelo?

HBO has locked him in for the TV, Alvarez has already proven that his name is big enough to sell a ton of tickets across several media markets, and he's proven himself to be a star behind the fights that he, himself, has chosen to take (to that, you can add that he already has an established promotional company, that's promoted over 70 shows over the last 5 years, carrying his name).

Golden Boy Promotions, for all intents and purposes, provides the legal license for Alvarez to fights in the US (Oscar still has strong cache in L.A., so he can also help with getting onto some Spanish-language media)

Good for him! Golden Boy has really taken care of him, he's also regained lots of fans after he beating Trout. His resume is looking pretty stacked!
