If you want to make it far as a pro I would generally say its best to start when you're young, before the age of 15. 25 is way too late if you want to turn professional and make decent money. If you want to do it as a hobby then 25 is not too late at all.

If you are dedicated you can make it, Jess Willard started boxing at 27, Sergio Martinez is also a late starter, and there are quiet a few more boxers that started pretty late in their career. Another great prospect is Luke Jackson from Australia, started at 19 if not mistaken and compiled a great amateur record, currently he is 30 years old and undefeated.

It depends, if you have always done sports and preferrably have a martial arts background, you can start at 25 and have a decent career, Algieri turned pro at 24 and never boxed as an amateur, but he was a very good kickboxer before that and he managed to become a world champion and fight Pacquiao.

However if u r not an athletic guy and never did sports regularily in your life it will be very hard to start competing in boxing at the age of 25, you can always try but don't rely on it as a sole source of income, do it like part time if u felt u have something special then make a career out of it.

try sparring, first. then get an amateur fight and see if you dont get pounded.

willard was 6.5 feet tall in an era where most HW were under 200 lbs and 6'.

martinez was a freakishly gifted athlete.

Antonio Tarver started boxing at 22, became an amateur world champion at 26, won the Pan American championship the same year and a year later he made the olympic team and got a bronze medal, then turned pro at 28 and became a world champion and beat Roy Jones!

He wasn't the most athletic guy around either, he had very good understanding of the game though and he never lost focus, that's why he was able to time one of the fastest fighters of all time and KO him.

I would start young like everyone else does 8-12 seems to be the sweet spots then gets your self some amatuer fights in and as you grow up you can decide if Boxing is something you really want to do or are even good at.

Started as an adult from sqaure 1 is very difficult (especially if you are not a natural athlete) but it is not impossible just would be the difficult route to take.

not being "the most athletic around" among world class boxers and regular people are different things. antonio tarver is an extremely athletic man compared to a control population.

tarver also caught roy jones after dropping down from HW very quickly. he was drained. he was also past his prime. there's a reason fighters don't move back down in weight.

very good win, but still a product mostly of jones' deterioration.
