Comments Thread For: Jamie McDonnell-Tomoki Kameda: Post-Fight Report Card

For the second time, we have a scoring debate.

    Note the word used.

It’s a debate. This is not a controversy. Controversy is bad and usually comes with something that makes the sport look less than credible. Whitaker-Chavez and Holyfield-Lewis I were scoring controversies that made boxing look bad.

What happened Sunday, and in Jamie McDonnell’s first of now two wins over Tomoki Kameda, makes people look at their scorecards and wonder. Those who score for McDonnell have to wonder what those scoring for Kameda saw that they didn’t.

Is Warren with Haymon? If McDonnell is staying in the US I wonder if that might be a good fight for both.

After getting stopped in 2 rounds maybe Kiko Martinez is a getting to the end of the road but I know he was going to take a fight at bantamweight until getting offered the Quigg shot. I'd like to see him in the mix against someone like Kameda.

McDonnell-Kameda fights have given the division some extra attention, hopefully McDonnell stays there, as I feel Frampton and Quigg beat him.

      Pre-Fight: Defense - McDonnell B; Kameda B/Post: B+; B
How the hell does this make sense?

McDonnell leaves his hands down everytime he throws his arm-punch combinations, hence him taking flush shots and looking busted up after the fight. Kameda on the other hand looked as fresh as a daisy, almost totally unmarked.

Kameda landed all the clean, heavy shots and negated McDonnell's work beautifully.

Really leaves a sour taste to see a fight scored so badly.

How did you score the fight, Cliff? I'm one of those that thought Kameda won.

I felt that Kameda won the fight. I was rooting for McDonnell but he just didn't look comfortable the whole fight and looked like he was forcing a lot of his work because his jab wasn't working and Kameda made the adjustments to use range more effectively and mix up his offense. McDonnell seemed to think that more of the same from the first fight would work and I guess based on the judges scorecards he was right. I just didn't see McDonnell land any really significant punches until later in the fight. He is the taller, rangier fighter and couldn't establish his jab all night and didn't really get into his rhythm until later in the fight. There were a good few swing rounds but Kameda fought smarter overall and landed what looked like the more effective punches. Kameda had better footwork and had McDonnell rushing his work and not finding the target more often than not. Maybe that's not what happened but that's how it looked on the fight broadcast. It reminded me a little of Mayweather/Pacquiao where one guy was pressuring but not able to find range while the other fighter used defense, movement and counter punching more effectively. I was also going for Pac but I couldn't find enough to give him more than 3 or 4 rounds.

My score is 114-113 for Kameda. He landed more clean power shots. McDonnell used his height and reach and established jabs, but it was not very effective. The score is close only because of knock down in a last round.
