Ward wasn't going to fight Sergey Kovalev off of a 14 month layoff.

So, after not fighting for 14 month, he started to work his way down with the Smith fight (turned out that he was fit enough to not need the 172 catchweight, but better safe than sorry from his camp), will continue down to 168 with his likely fight on the Cotto-Canelo card, and then he'll be back on his perch as 168 kingpin, until he physically can't make 168.

    try harder next time

And let me tell you something, 168 now is even ****tier than 160, there is nobody for Ward there, ****ing caveman Abraham is ranked 2 at smw LOL
Lara is ready to fight him at 160, Ward is ready to fight him at 168; both fights would easily give Golovkin the best opponents, by far, that he's faced as a professional fighter.

Ward has never run his mouth about calling out fighters at 175, unlike Golovkin having pursued a handful of other fighters at 168 not named Andre Ward.

ggg said he would fight anyone at 168 but he's not since he has better fights at 160, ward said he would fight anyone at 175 but he's not since he has better fights like zac dunn and paul smith. get it now? one guy is a fraud who is cashing out with crap fights while avoiding the best with nothing better to do. ther other guy is ggg.

Ward has always been a big SMW, it's about time he fights where he did during the Olympics.

GGG doesn't need an excuse to duck Ward:

          1. Ward hasn't fought anyone of note in years. He isn't ranked in P4P anymore. He can't even give away his tickets. He is not a draw. He last fought at 172, and admittedly walks around at 180. (I'll use all that as reason one)

          2. GGG rehydrates to 170, and Ward would to 185-190. If GGG went up to SMW and beat Ward, it'd give every other MW and pretender MW (Cotto/Alverez) an excuse to duck him.

          3. GGG is a smaller MW, just so happens to blast like a bigger fighter,

          4. GGG last weigh in came in at 157.

          5. GGG started out as a Welterweight when non-pro, but was a MW in the Olympics. He didn't move down after the Olympics to fight smaller fighters like Ward did.

          6. GGG is a growing star with a large backing. If he keeps winning, he'll soon be the PPV attraction everyone wants. Ward, well he has thrown his career away. He needs to rebuild it.

          7. GGG would be a moron to throw the opportunity to get all MW belts by going upto SMW, just to fight a LHW who hasn't fought a live body in two years.

LETS NOT FORGET--Ward has had multiple chances to get in the ring with GGG. He recently had a chance to meet at 164, and get 50% of purse.

Ward had Dawson come down to 168, so there's no excuse for Ward being unwilling to come down to 164 if he is so great.

But Ward would need every bit of that 15-20 pounds he'd have on GGG if they fought now. Because GGG would hurt him.

I'm willing to bet after GGG unifies the MW, beats Canelo, and possibly even Floyd (but doubt Floyd will back his mouth up, always saying he'd beat GGG), then he'll move up to SMW.

I bet when GGG puts on 8 more pounds, suddenly Ward will demand it's at 175.
          a couple point:

-Andre Ward won the light heavyweight Olympic gold medal at his walk-around weight of 172-173 (Ward and Dirrell were the two best boxers on the US Olympic team, and both fighters generally competed at 165; Ward moved up a division to give Team USA two legit opportunities to medal)

-Andre Ward's day-of weight for the Dawson fight was 176lbs, and Ward has gone public with his walk-around weight now being in the low 180s out of camp (Thanks, SportsNation)

-Golovkin has never weighed in below 159 for a single fight in his entire professional career (Thanks, BoxRec)

-Dawson fought Ward at 168, because Chad Dawson went on TV and told the world that he was ready to see Ward and 168, and Ward held him to that; Team Golovkin has been running their mouths about being willing to see any fighter 154-168, and Ward is going to hold him to that, too.

no need to blatantly make up some bull****

ward said he would be willing to fight anyone at 168 or 175 yet he wouldn't even fight bute, stevenson, or froch 2 while he tried to fight truax, sartison, and zac dunn. your hypocrisy knows no bounds.

kovalev is ready at 175 and yes ward said he would fight anyone at 175. same exact thing that ggg said you hypocrite. ward even said he would beat klitschko and that he would be a heavyweight by 2013. why aren't you calling out his big claims? because you are biased that's why. ward does the same exact thing as ggg and you ignore it. you also ignore that ward has turned down many top fighters in his own division. something ggg has never done.

Team Kovalev offered $500k plus 25% of the Canadian PPV money (that Beterbiev would be bringing to the table). Beterbiev is in a position where he doesn't need to tolerate a **** deal.

Lock in the official mandatory position and force Main Events to come to the table with a better offer; if the second offer isn't much better, Beterbiev understands that he's still entitled to 25% of whatever the purse bid ends up being (plus additional upside on the fight, a la David Lemieux's vacant IBF title fight, since his camp clearly has the deeper pockets than Duva does).

If Kovalev simply ducks out, he looks like a ***** and Beterbiev-Rodriguez likely gets made for the vacant IBF belt, with Beterbiev controlling the entire pot, putting another star champion in the GYM fold (possibly a star in his native Russia).

boxing is more than simply two guys deciding to throw hands.

In mid 2013 Ward rejected an offer to fight Stevenson in Oakland at 168 and in Montreal at 175. Despite coming off a 1st round KO over Dawson, Ward said Stevenson won't get a shot until he has won some big fights.

                  Cherry picks: Pavlik, Smith.
Attempted cherry picks: Truax, Sartison, Dunn, Agnew at 168, Oosthuizen at 168 and Chavez - right after his loss to Martinez.
Bute ducked the Super Six tournement, where the other top fighters in the division spent the next two years beating each up in. Bute thought he was slick (Canadian star versus Super Six winner in a big fight) and Ward would have none of it.

Bute steps in with Froch, a hard man made even more rugged through the tournament, and gets utterly destroyed.

                  try again

Ward fought at his walk around weight in the Olympics, debuted at basically his Olympic weight for his first two pro bouts, spent his next 7 fights at his initial pro weight of 160lbs, before then filling into 168 as a professional (where he's been for 15 of his 18 following fights.

Ward got hit by Darnell Boone with a bomb, but he's continued to fill out his frame and hasn't been damaged by a shot from any fighter since (Boone fight happened at 160 when Ward was all of 6-0).

Golovkin's next fight, assuming he gets by the 15:1 underdog David Lemieux, is likely to be against either Tureano Johnson (IBF mandatory) or J.S. Heiland (vacant WBC 160 belt, as Cotto-Alvarez winner is likely to be named WBC 160 champ emeritus before having their rematch for on of the various WBC trophy belts).

Neither of those fights draws even half the attention of a possible Ward-Golovkin fight (especially if the rumors of Ward being the chief support to Cotto-Alvarez prove true). Keep lying to yourself if you want.

Gennady Golovkin is 33 years old, fought 350 amateur fights before turning pro, has been a pro for a decade now, and has yet to be put into a single meaningful fight as a pro.

Floyd's hanging up the gloves, Arum is never going to even think of the fight, Hopkins is steady chasing a 168 belt, and Cotto/Alvarez are on the verge of engaging in a trilogy (first fight in Nov, rematch May/June2016-depending on the winner, with the third Sep/Nov2016-depending on the winner).

Golovkin is on the verge of going another year without a meaningful fight, likely feasting on another four bum fighters while openly ducking Andre Ward. Some legacy, lol.
