Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Floyd Mayweather: So, This is Goodbye

by David P. Greisman - There are millions of reasons why Floyd Mayweather Jr. shouldn’t retire. Tens of millions, really. Perhaps even a hundred million.

And there are hundreds of millions of reasons why Mayweather can hang up his gloves for good even though he doesn’t have to.

We are not accustomed to athletes going out on their own terms. We’ve become used to them going out at the right time, or far beyond it, when there has been a noticeable decline from their prime, when their statistics drop, their injuries accumulate, and their younger counterparts assert an increasing influence.

We definitely don’t tend to see boxers leave until it’s too late, when they lose more often to those less talented, or when they face those who still can do what they now cannot.

Mayweather is not like the rest.

He has not lost. Not to one of the other best boxers of this generation, not to the other titleholders and contenders, not to anyone bigger, not to anyone younger. He still appears to have enough of his skills and reflexes and speed left to beat everyone in his division, and he has decades of intelligence and experience that would allow him to prolong his undefeated career even as age and time continue to lessen his physical gifts.

He can still earn more for his fights than anyone else, and more in one year than 99.9 percent of fighters will earn in their careers. He could add more to his bank accounts, add more exorbitantly expensive vehicles to his garages, add more ***elry and jets and other trappings of opulence to an already lavish lifestyle. i'm not pac turd nor a flo-mo...

      But Good riddance.

Just because he calls himself TBE and the best boxer in the planet, it doesn't mean that his style of fighting defines what boxing is supposed to be.

He always liked to talk about health first and whatever, but the truth is that boxing is a combat sport. It's an entertainment spectacle where two men fight each other in their best of their ability.

He got away with running marathons, elbowing other fighters and tricking people into buying his PPV's. He fought inside and outside of the rules of boxing, fighting while backpedaling for his life, bending his body below the waist, pushing other people with his hands and elbows.

He said so himself, he's a rich coward.
And he's NOT the best boxer in history. Being undefeated means nothing if you don't take risks. Beating the best fighters means nothing if you fight them when they're washed up.

Only his brainwashed supporters will claim he was the best boxer in the sport.

HIs numbers will never be broken, he set records, opponents can't hit him.

Mayweather is the greatest of all time, probably the greatest athlete of all time. He saved boxing from MMa and put it back on the map.

        FLOYD MAYWEATHER THE BEST EVER!

Although I don't think Mayweather is the best boxer ever, he certainly is the best from the business and marketing perspective. And no matter what folks around here say, Mayweather will be missed. All you have to do is look at the number of threads that are created about him directly or indirectly on a daily basis to see his impact on the sport.

And isn't it ironic that immediately following this post, some Floydiot comes on basically coming across as Floydie himself in drag. A great boxer has the defensive AND offensive skills down. A great boxer doesn't have to stack the deck way high to give them overwhelming odds. One classic example, if Floydie whining pizzing and moaning about Maidana's gloves does register in your head... you are definitely delusional and have been ****** into the propaganda machine. That's as bad as a person still voting for an obviously corrupt mayor just because they're the same party affiliation. IF the media lets go and learns to go cold turkey from the 'Floydie crutch', boxing will be much better off.

And what's with this blowhard taking any and every opportunity to bask in his obvious narcissism? Yet another clue he's no where near GOAT. I don't recall Louis, Marciano, Robinson, Moore... the true greats go off like that. Because they DIDN'T HAVE TO. They did their job in the ring at near perfection, and were soft spoken outside the ring. Ali was the lone exception, but he had the whole package down perfectly for a few years there, and he was a fighter trying to blast out of the pack by any means necessary. At a time when the interviewers would even come back at boxers if they were too boisterous.

But anyway, don't be surprised if they dig up Sinatra from the grave to sing 'My Way' while Floydie makes his supposed final ring entrance. I wouldn't put it past him one iota.

I never understood why people get so emotional because he said he was the best ever. Isn't that what fighters say about themselves? Why can't he say that about himself? As for the people continually whining about his style of fighting... If that's the argument you have to criticize him then you really don't have an argument. Think about it, he spent 19 years fighting and beating other fighters of all different skill level and the only thing you can say he was boring doing it.

Great send off for a fighter who's all smoke and mirrors. No ones giving two ***s about his ppv.

He did it his way and made far more money than he ever imagined he would, yet he's still an angry bitter man. Why?
