Comments Thread For: Mayweather: I Beat More World Champs, Berto Will Be 23

WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) says Andre Berto will be his 23rd contest with current or former world champion. Mayweather believes that he currently has the record for beating the most world champions in the shortest amount of time.

The fight with Berto is scheduled for September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with Showtime Pay-Per-View carrying the event.

Berto is a former WBC and IBF welterweight champion, but viewed as a huge underdog after going 3-3 in his last six fights and dealing with injuries over the last few years.

he didnt say "current" champion...but berto was just not a belt holder..he had a string of defenses...i think there is a difference in belt holder and champion...regardless berto is likely far past it or maybe he got in shape like never before and will bring out more in floyd like chino did...pacquiao didnt bring out more than chino

Floyd has fought everybody that he's been asked to in the last few years and Berto is a soft touch which Floyd has earned at this point. Although, Berto is on by far the biggest stage of his career and has a good trainer in his corner so I wouldn't be completely shocked if he has a good showing that night and comes to fight.

I agree with Floyd on what he said, exception being is that Oscar is the one who brought the money to the lower divisions.

While he does have a point .....Still doesn't make up for this being a **** fight. Floyd.

"Berto will be [world champ] #23"

That sentence shows you exactly why the record is meaningless. Back when there was only one belt, the only way to fight another champion was to lose the belt to somebody and do a rematch or fight someone from a different division (which was harder to do when there were fewer divisions).

I'm not acting like all of Mayweather's competition has been weak, just pointing out that the comparisons across generations are hard to make with these numbers outside of additional context.

And with that, I leave you with this:

they didn't always have 4 belts in every division, hell they only used to have half the divisions so you can't compare it at all. also the corruption has seemingly doubled and any fight like broner-khabib (both guys coming off losses) can fight for a belt so it's almost meaningless beating someone who was a world champ since any fight can be for a belt.
