I guess the red hair helps, but there's plenty of lighter skinned Mexicans trying to become soneone in the sport. The difference between them and Canelo is Canelo has been good enough to climb to the sport's epitome.

Before he came to the states I watched his fights because he was knocking people out. Believe me, if Canelo would have ****** back then no one woukd care about him today.

Hopefully it's not based off the open scoring Trout fight or the 117-111 scorecard from the Lara fight.

Canelo is not a star just because of his fights, he had the perfect look for the marketing machine to get behind him. I don't think you guys understand where his star power comes from at all...with a mexican fighter, you can't just take into account what americans have seen. He is a star in America because first, he was a star in Mexico.

During the late 90's, early 00's, the biggest network in Mexico took boxing to PPV and it really took a toll on the popularity of boxing in Mexico(3rd world country....take it to ppv.....nice thinking), which was already declining in the curve of JCC's career. Jorge Arce was part of a C-list celebrity reality show in Mexico and that's when the second biggest TV network in mexico snagged him and started the return of boxing to free tv with him as the face. But it took a while for them to really get people watching a lot.....it was probably in late 2006 when boxing really started to have good ratings and with it, the two biggest networks really started competing, but by this time you had Morales and Barrera on the way out, and Arce just wasn't that good. Marquez became the star but he is also an older guy, so the networks started searching for their big young up and comer, Azteca(2nd biggest network) had Top Rank and thus JCC Jr coming up and Televisa(biggest) needed their young star. By 2008, Canelo had earned some acclaim and Televisa went all in on him. You have to understand that Televisa is a huge network....biggest spanish speaking network in the world and the level of influence they have is huge....Canelo had the look that made him recognisable instantly and he was good enough, had power and usually ended fights explosively. It was a perfect match for them. Now, when something gets popular in Mexico, it carries over to the mexican-american community, and on top of that, because of the nostalgia it creates for mexican-americans to connect to mexican things(plus poserism) and the higher earning power they have, Canelo had a huge built in fanbase before even stepping to america. It was the perfect storm for Canelo, he had the right look to entice the biggest marketing machine, was good enough to not get derailed, is the right size for the american audience...in Mexico he is still very popular, but has no real credibility ever since his disgraceful performance versus Floyd(considering the marketing behind him was that he was the new JCC), but in America, he probably has kept a better reputation because the media were very lenient with him and his performance in the mayweather fight(consider how hard they've gone in on Pacquiao and Mayweather since that dud).

Lara could've derailed the train completely but he blew it....was the much better boxer, but failed to perform at the level required to end Canelo's run as an "elite" fighter.

Canelo is a hype job? Canelo is better at his job than the majority of his critics. You can get trained by Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber from Dragon Ball Z, and still wouldn't last 1 round with Erislandy Lara or Austin Trout, let alone beat them or fight close with one.

The ko of baldomir really put him on the map first..

Then the mosely fight made him known to pretty much all fans, not just the hardcore ones..

                    Trout fight made canelo legit

Floyd fight made him mainstream famous

Lara fight reinforces the fact that canelo is a legit world class fighter..

Cotto fight will turn canelo into a legit PPv star and the heir apparent to floyd and manny as the cash cow of boxing
yep if he beats cotto, canelo will clearly be the A-side

I agree with everything you wrote except the most loyal boxing fans are the Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in any order and they have always been, asians just came on the scene with Pacqiaou. And to answer the question there is no one particular fight that made Canelo a bonafide super star it's his last 5 or so he is willing to take on all comers.
