Comments Thread For: What is the Point of Deontay Wilder-Johann Duhaupas?

True, but Duhaupas is crap.
No, that doesn't seem very likely. I would also give any top 10 a good shot, but Duhaupas is not top 10.Comment

Wasn't a massive fan of Wilder before he fought Stiverne. I thought he fought a great fight and schooled Stiverne, without going wild like he usually does. Not sure about this stay busy fight, it could backfire. That said, he is WBC champ so I'd expect he needs to be stepping up his competition sooner rather than later!Comment

My point is that experience isn't just a number that you increase every time you fight, RPG style. If you knock over ten weak opponents in a row that doesn't equal fighting one or two hard challengers who can test you and take you to places you've never been to before. Wilder's been doing the former for too long and his current level of development reflects this. He's overconfident while still being wild and undisciplined because he hasn't yet had to fight someone who can punish his bad habits. In this case his 'experience' has left him more prone to putting himself in dangerous situations; it hasn't really helped him at all.Comment

Right on the bullseye, bad matchmaking can ruin a fighter, apart from keeping him safe this fight doesn't do anything for him, doesn't help him grow as a fighter in any way. He is a champion already, time for these type of fights are over.My point is that experience isn't just a number that you increase every time you fight, RPG style. I'll tell you the point...the point is wilder as soon as he meets someone with good all round ability in the heavyweight ranks he will get Ko'ed...maybe winders camp know this already and that's why he is taking these kind of fights....you carry on wilder with these ridiculous defences against c grade rated opponents... And you just stay there holding the fort till our own Anthony Joshua crushes you in front your American audience.......the bottom line is it's the first time an American has won the heavyweight title in well over a decade and this is the kind of legacy he wants to remembered by......defending against road road sweepers....lol.....go USAComment

This is simply unacceptable for a champion to fight someone like this. It's not like there was a shortage of crappy fighters to pick from who would have been better opponents, hell the guy who beat Duhaupas this year would have made a lot more sense. But I guess that's asking way to much from wilder.
His team sucks. He's been matched extremely soft his entire career which is only going to hurt him when he steps up. I was fine with it early on since he didn't have much amateur experience and since most of these fights weren't on TV. But he has a belt now. Time to take the training wheels off.Comment

He is crap alright. If he wasn't crap then you would have heard of him and Wilder wouldn't be fighting him. No champion I know beat worse fighters on their way to a title shot and no champion I know fights worse challengers in defense of their title. This guy is ranked number 32 by Boxrec and that's about where the last guy Wilder fought was ranked. Wilder beat a top 10 guy once in his career when he won the title. Everyone else he ever fought was ranked below number 30. Wilder might be the 5th or 6th best heavyweight in the world but Wlad is the champ and he is fighting Fury who is much better than Wilder. Fury has defeated better guys than Wilder ever fought. Wilder badly needs to up the quality of his opposition a lot if he is to be taken seriously.Comment
