    How would that even work?

Duva comes to HBO and says, here's Stevenson, we want to fight him and will fight him, even though that fight won't come to HBO as Al Haymon and HBO don't get along. HBO say, that's great, here's the contract. Then Duva says oops, won't fight Stevenson. Leaving both HBO and Stevenson conned?

Stevenson's name didn't help Duva get HBO contract. Now BHop's titles, that's another matter. Stevenson and his manager gave Duva a gift when they messed BHop around so he got fed up and made the fight with Duva in 2 days. If Kovalev had 1 title and Stevenson had 3, Duva would think twice about signing with HBO.

Besides, don't forget, Stevenson has no contract with Showtime. He has a contract with Al Haymon. Stevenson (in theory) is free to fight on HBO.

The party that needs to be put pressure on here is HBO. They should bankroll Duva's bid for the purse bid. And if they lose they should let Haymon run the fight. Kovalev is likely to win it and come back to their network as the only unified champ in boxing. They should take a risk.
Thing is, they were pretty invested in that fight. They shouldn't bid against Haymon, they got a limited budget they should use wisely. Stevenson is welcome to fight Kovalev on HBO for career best money and exposure. And it's not just that, it would really boost his flagging appeal and standing, would have long term benefits. If he won of course. Nobody cares about him now, even in Canada.

I like Kovalev, but Stevenson is on point here.....

Team Kovalev talked utter shht, and then ducked out the back door at the very first opportunity.

No idea why, but Stevensons thoughts could be correct on the matter.

Maybe they did play him against HBO.

      Anyway, it doesnt matter why......

      * Kovalev called Stevenson a piece of shht
      * Kovalev called Stevenson a coward for moving to Shotime
      * Duva admitted that the Shotime deal was in Stevensons best interest
      * Duva pulled out of a purse bid
      * Kovalev then prcoeeded to to the exact same thing that he abused Stevenson for doing..... killing the fight by signing an exclusive TV deal

      Funny shht !

The most relevant comment in that article.....
" thats why they have a purse bid "

Technically, neither fighter ducked..... but if anybody is going to throw stones at all, then it shouldnt be at Stevenson.

This pandering to HBO is mindless rubbish.
But there's one major difference. Stevenson gave HBO and opportunity to match his Showtime deal and they refused. People always seem to forget that part. He didn't run to Showtime, he used Showtime as leverage for a better HBO deal and HBO said no thanks.

They're not gonna be nickel and dimed over Fonfara, straight off ESPN2. Look how it worked out long term, Stevenson is doing pathetic ratings and gate in one of North America's best boxing markets, missing out on all the bigger money fights around.

That's not what happened. Hopkins took less money to fight Kovalev in order for Main Events to drop the lawsuit and they did. Hopkins even said he took the fight because of the lawsuit.

Mandatory fights and purse bids trump exclusive network deals. If the champion doesn't want to fight his mandatory he must relinquish the belt. The ABC organizations don't recognize exclusive network deals.

Stevenson is doing pretty well. He's getting paid more than Kovalev and he's a bigger draw. Kovalev/Mohammedi sold 400 tickets. I've been to high school basketball games that sold more tickets than that. Adonis was 36 years old when he made that move. He's in the twilight of his career, he wanted something long-term. He gave HBO and opportunity to match and they refused. A lot of the blame for the fight not happening has to fall on HBO.

Kovalev has zero following, he was fighting for 20k a few years ago. Stevenson is from Quebec, he should be doing far better as Canada's most established champ. He didn't even sell 5k tickets in his last fight, and his ratings have been terrible. I get he was old when he got his first title, and wants to milk it some on very low risk/low reward fights, it's understandable.

You may think Kov's in the same mould as ******man, but you'd pretty much be alone.

Stevenson's explanation makes no sense. I know most boxers are not very smart but damn.
