The WBC Rules require 1 mandatory defense per year. He won the title in January so starting negotiations in October is nothing against the rules.

Team Wilder is smart because he clearly isn't ready for Povetkin. He needs more work to be ready for that defense late this year/early next year.

Stiverne having picked up a vacant belt had to face two mandates back to back per the WBC rules, he fought and lost to Wilder with one defence remaining which the WBC stated would roll over to Wilder, with Jennings then dropping out to face Wlad it in turn bought Wilder a little more time whilst Perez and Povetkin played out, it's entirely plausible Haymon already paid the WBC. Perez could have been intended to be named as Wilder's defence after Jennings dropped out.

I'm happy with a fight versus Duhaupas whilst we wait on Povetkin or a unification to materialise, after all Wlad has to dispense of Fury. My chief concern at the time was Fury ducking Klitschko to take the softer fight versus Wilder, thankfully that never happened and now Wlad has the chance to add both of these over sized goons to his resume.

Or we could be watching Fury vs Povetkin, for all the marbles, in about 18 months time.

I think Wilder can beat Povetkin. Sasha takes his time getting set before throwing, could prove fatal against Wilder if he lands the right hand.

All this drawing it out defending against bums isn't fair on the fans, and it's not right for the sport.
Fights means nothing when wilder been fighting bums before stiverne but I agree with holding up but the WBC is to blame if your going blame anyone with having negotiations start so late why not milk in some volunteers defenses

if he isn't ready why did they get him a belt in the first place? if he isn't ready he should be taking this fights as a challenger, not as a champion

If wilder controls povetkin with his jab like wlad did minus the clinching he can win I just see povetkin getting inside and landing one of them loaded punches on wilder **** Molina stunned his a$$ lol

The guy is now a HW champ!

The time for gaining experience and getting rounds in should be well over!

It's utterly disgraceful that you have a green with a belt and a prime warrior like Povetkin unable to take what's rightfully his!

                  Unbelievable!

Big deal just wait, anybody in Wilders position would like to squeeze in some quick bank in a couple optional defences. Besides Povetkin blew it against Wlad. Wilder will probably beat him anyway.
