I've not seen the knockout so you might be right about it being a lead hook - but what you described is not a check hook.
That would be a counter hook - a check hook is a hook where you catch your opponent coming in and more often than not you pivot off with it!

this one was a lead hook. if you watch the replay, he actually throws two of them. the second one knocks his opponent out.
as for the check hook, to illustrate to the laymon what a fighter is tryign to do with the check left hook, i ask him to think about a "check swing."
the punch is thrown with the idea that the opponent is goign to move forward. if he doesn't, it won't land. if he does, the hook is thrown to meet him.
