Comments Thread For: Frank Warren on Mayweather Ranking Himself as TBE

There is no question that over the last two decades Floyd Mayweather Jnr has carved out the unquestionable status as the best fighter of his generation.

He has taking revenue generation in the sport to dizzying new heights and it’s hard to see anyone getting close to making the money he has in the sport again.

The unashamedly confident Floyd recently listed his opinion on the greatest ever five fighters. Unsurprisingly, given he refers to himself often publicly as ‘TBE’ or ‘The Best Ever’, Floyd placed himself at number one on this list.

As a kid watching some cards on TV with Dad, seeing several Ray Robinson fights, what stuck with me the most: The guy was more fluid, engaged more, stopped fighters more than Floydie ever did. No comparison. And this is taking into account that the absolute prime Robinson's fights weren't even filmed. Ask some of the old geezer boxing fans, they're tell you.

So all this static from Floydie is just a load of hooie. The only 'all time' he gets is All Time Biggest Ego. Good defensive fighter. Good runner. Excellent at picking low-risk challengers. Nothing more.

As for a top ten I wouldn't even wanna go there. So many greats thru the years. Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Hagler, Ali, Holmes, Marciano, Tyson, Louis, Pep, Baer, Saddler, LaMotta, Liston, Charles, Pacquiao, Floydie, Chavez Sr, Whitaker, Frazier, Hopkins, Lewis, Wlad, Holyfield, Dempsey, Armstrong... in no particular order, and for many different reasons. IOW mainly for their guts to fight anyone, their toughness, their beating the odds (size disadvantage, etc etc etc), whatever. Even creating top ten lists is daft, for a sport with so much history. But I don't think a fighter is #1 because they have a 0 on their record. That's ridiculous IMO.

going by word of mouth and stoppages isnt the right thing to do tho..
not arguing against robinson, but if he was so great and ppl knew it why did ppl not film him? and when they started filming him he started losing to white boxers...HE NEVER FOUGHT BLACK FIGHTERS! the word is he avoided murder's row which was a list of black fighters...

the word of mouth part gets me everytime..bc our writers today hate on floyd he the best defensive fighter by the numbers ever...same they did with pernell...so a style over another style is just not going to cut it for me...why did robinson lose to underdogs time and time again and this was not just late in his career...he went to london and fought a bit of a slickster and boom his code was cracked...dont tell me about age bc he went on to win more titles vs the same white guy style of that time he had been fighting

Mayweather does make a really good case for himself. If he beats Berto he'll be tied with Joe Louis for consecutive title fight wins, have won more championships than any other fighter, be tied for most lineal championships won in his career, and far and away be the highest earning boxer of all time, all in less than 50 fights, and with 22 former titlists faced in his career. Add to the fact that he's 38 and considered the best fighter in the sport, which doesn't happen in any sport ever. If he's not be the greatest, he's top 10 easy.

Hate his personal life all you like, but his ring accomplishments are damn near unmatched.
