Benn had too much too soon,he was going to challenge Michael Nunn in 1988,then the following year Nunn made an offer of £ 3million to fight him (it was soon after his Kalambay win). It was all abit crazy. Nigel was a superstar and celebrity after only one year as a pro boxer, when before that he was nothing. Its no wonder he got so complacent (Logan,Watson).
Benn probably had the most meteoric rise of any boxer! He was back living with his parents in 1986 and catching buses everywhere (when he could afford the fares!) but then one year later he had flash cars, flash clothes, flash chicks, nice house, the full load - and mostly just because of his sick natural punching power that caught public imagination (and fights shown on terrestrial ITV at prime times).

Seems more excitin fighters get thrown in early (Tyson, Benn), where the better thinkers take their time (Lennox, Hopkins)

How is Pantera getting rushed? He is 26-0 with 23 KO's coming off a great KO of Howard Eastman. It's funny... 6 months ago people said he has never been tested fighting poor competition. Now he is stepping it up and continuing his dominance. How can you say he is being rushed?

David Reid was definately rushed. He prevailed in his title fight but soon found he was over his head.

Antonio Tarver is a classic example of taking your time. The guy was a pedigree amatuer and then took his time coming up in the pros.

Yeah but the Tyson that fought Spinks takes out Lewis.

And the Benn that fought Barkley takes out Hopkins.

Tyson and Benn too young, too fast, too fresh, too powerful for wily old veterans that Lewis and Hopkins became in their primes of recent years.

                    Quick:
                    Oscar De La Hoya
                    Jeff Lacy
                    David Reid
                    Fernando Vargas
                    Mayweather

Notice that they were all Olympians

                    Slow:
                    Margarito
                    Hopkins
                    Wright
                    Juan Manuel Marquez
                    Aaron Pryor

I dunno if Winky Wright deserved the respect earlier as he does now.
