To keep hold of the Ring lineal title, all you need to do is successfully defend it against anybody in that division, within a period of not more than 2 years.
Andre Ward is still recognised as the lineal SMW champ by some sources, but the Ring stripped him of their lineal title in Feb, because he hadn't fought another SMW in over 2 years. So now, according to the Ring magazine, the lineal SMW title is vacant.
The winner of Cotto/Canelo could refuse to fight GGG and be stripped of the WBC belt, but still be recognised as lineal MW champ. Under those circumstances though, that wouldn't mean much.

How quickly people forget about the Sergio Martinez/Sebastian Zbik/Julio Chavez Jr situation.
- After Alvarez beats Cotto by decision they'll announce a rematch
- The WBC will announce Golovkin the WBC MW champion
- The WBC will announce Alvarez the WBC MW Diamond champion
- Alvarez will beat Cotto a 2nd time and then take a couple of 160lbs fights prior to GGG
Even if Alvarez starches Cotto and there's no rematch, he'll defend his Diamond title a few times at 160lbs prior to Golovkin. Bottom line is that the WBC will protect Alvarez the same way they protected Chavez - all while keeping a title around their waist and the actual champion's waist.

So, I assume that most have seen an actual weigh-in ?
And I assume that most understand the concept.
Divisions, weight-limits, should not require an explanation.
But all of a sudden, your latest girlfriend decides to impose an additional sanction restricting the maximum weight that his opponent can make..... and you asshats turn into stuttering ******s who seemingly fail to understand the concept of divisions and weight restriction.
Feign ignorance if you must, but coming out with childish rubbish like..... but it close doe, but it within the divisional range doe, but he small doe..... proves that you are either unintelligent or dishonest.
Smarten up..... and if you do not wish to display the extent of your creepy man-love for your current girlfriend, then keep your silly excuses to yourself.

JMW is 154, MW is 160.
Canelo weighs 155, and Cotto weighs 153.
You are obviously pretty ******.
Who cares what {insert silly ABC trinket here} is at stake.
You would have to be pretty fkn ****** to insist that a guy who weighs 153 is a middleweight.
Get a girlfriend you clown, that creepy man-love thing you got going for Golovkin makes your panties show.

A red container, a blue container, even a green one.
Cotto is the best MW, right ?
Stevenson is the best LHW, right ?
Shall I keep going, or are those two obvious examples enough to show you that " lineage " aint worth shht.
Tell me which of the last 5 lineal MW champs were the best in their division when they had the lineage?
Answer: NONE !

Cotto won the WBC strap/lineage by winning a money fight with Martinez.
Are you not aware of that ?
You fanboy fascination with worthless ABC straps has turned you into an idiot.
OK idiot, a guy who weighs 153 is a middleweight.
OK then, whatever helps you sleep at night.

The divisional limit for middleweight is 160, and it always has been.
Dishonest/fanboy posters who are lacking in knowledge are trying to confuse you, most likely to justify some lame catchweight on behalf of their current girlfriend.
It works like this.....
FACT: The divisional limit for middleweight is 160
meaning: you can weight up to 160 at the official weigh-in
FACT: When a contractual sanction is imposed reducing the maximum allowed weight for a middleweight bout below 160, then that fight becomes a catchweight contest by default
meaning: you can weigh up to the imposed sanction
How the fcuk could you asshats find that confusing.
Stop making lame childish excuses for your poosey girlfriend.

Canelo and Cotto are obviously JMW's, weighing 155 and 153 respectively.
Then you wrote this:
