Shocking right? The area I live in has a big Mexican population though so I would have expected a larger turnout.

Not sure if I'll go see this in a theater or not, but it brings to mind to me the old days of closed circuit.

Big fights starting sometime around the Ali era (FotC and such), before PPV technology existed, would be shown at arenas around the country. You'd go pay and watch it along with a bunch of other fight fans from your area.

First one I went to was Leonard-Duran I, then the rematch, Leonard-Hearns, Hagler-Hearns, Holmes-Cooney and several others in that era. We went an hour away to the nearest big city, always with a bunch of fight fans and maybe a couple of local club fighters or amateurs.

Sometimes you'd get a live undercard before the CC show started, two or three fights with local guys.

It was always a great time. People are cheering for both guys, it's closer to the atmosphere of being at a big fight than watching it at home with a few friends in your living room like now with PPV.

Last one I attended (and probably the last big closed circuit fight) was Leonard-Hagler. I had just landed my first job out of college, was starting work the next Monday and it was my first night in Nashville. All my stuff is in boxes, I know literally no one.

I see an ad in the newspaper that the downtown auditorium has the CC, and I decide to go. I get my ticket, go and find a seat in this packed arena and ... I'm at home, me and a bunch of fight fans. Met all the people around me, everybody was great, some cheering for Leonard, some for Hagler, but everybody into the fight. I'll always remember that as a great first night in a new town.

I like how those things brought people together, something we had in common and could share.
