Boxing needs PPV fights, not PPV stars.

Often the question comes up "who will be the next PPV star", everyone's looking for the next big star. When that question comes up, my answer is "nobody hopefully".

I don't want to mention Floyd v Berto too much because it's been done to death already but this is exactly the reason i don't want PPV Stars as such. Don't get me wrong, i think Floyd is great and has earned his place in boxing history but this is the problem when you get a PPV Star. People end up having to pay for a fight like Floyd v Berto. Lets be honest, is Floyd v Guerrero worthy of PPV? no of course not. Floyd v Canelo, fair enough.

What we need is PPV fights in future. If fighters want to make the big money then they should fight the other top fighters and make it into a PPV event, otherwise fans should not have to pay out for Floyd v Guerrero, Manny v Rios etc I don't think there's anything wrong with those fights, they can fight killers every fight but it shouldn't be PPV...I think it's part of the downfall in popularity of the sport. If these people like Manny and Floyd who are big names were fighting their lesser opponents on free TV, the sport would benefit massively because millions would tune in because of their fame, then i think more people would buy PPV for the worthy fights because the free fights allow them to be more in tune with whats happening in the sport and it'll gain new fans.

It just seems the aim of fighters now is to be a PPV star, not a great fighter.

Leave the PPV for the genuine big exciting fights and let more people get in tune with boxing. Boxing was in a good place before PPV and PPV stars.

I don't even think Kovalev-Stevenson is PPV worthy.

Every sport is gonna have someone raised up as a star so you can't have a PPV fight without sooner or later developing a PPV star. Thats just sorta how things work. In virtually any noteworthy field someone or several people are heralded as its stars.

I'd rather see the death of PPV, if thats possible. I don't think boxing can ever escape the "niche sport" hole its dug for itself if PPV doesn't die or at least isn't defined as the pinnacle of boxing as its been for a few decades now. For everything there is a season & I'm rooting for the PPV season to be ending.

PPV in general is what the problem is. The biggest fights need to be available for everyone to see.

I agree. UFC follows this and have actually grown in house PPV stars with this method.
