The State Of Boxing In Five Years?

If people think boxing is in a bad state now. It will only get worse when Floyd and Manny retire. Floyd is considered to be the last great American prize fighter. He is a special talent. Not just a good fighter but a great one. I recall Jim Lampley saying "never has it been more clear who the sports best pound for pound fighter is."

Pacquiao not only was an exciting fighter he was a rare talent. A former flyweight who had gone up to win the welterweight title. These guys don't get a ton of hype for no reason. They got their hype because they were truly gifted boxers.

Boxing has been on the decline in the U.S. for years now. People just aren't as interested in the sport as they were years ago. The dissatifaction with boxing started long before Mayweather became a superstar. Mayweather and Pacquiao are the sports only true superstars. They brought a lot of attention to the sport. Soon they, Bernard Hopkins, and Vladimir Klitschko will all be retired. And when that happens there will be a huge void left in the sport. If you think boxing is on its last legs now just wait and see what happens when its last superstars are gone.

These young and up and coming fighters are good but I don't see that special level of talent in them that I saw in Floyd and Manny. I doubt Keith Thurman, Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, or Adrien Broner will be dominant fighters by the time they are in their mid 30s like Floyd and Manny were. Most people don't even know who these guys are and they are in their primes right now!

Hearing boxing fans say "I can't wait for Floyd and Manny to retire" is like hearing a little kid saying they can't wait to grow up only to later find out how difficult being an adult truly is. You guys think being a boxing fan is tough now just wait and see what it's like in five years.

It'll be just like it was from 2004-2008. Good fights with some terrible Golden Boy and Top Rank PPVs. Latin Fury come back.

Hard to believe Canelo will be 30 5 years from now.

Well, did anyone ever think Manny or Floyd would become the biggest draws and transcend the sport? A lot can happen in 5 years. Lets hope we have a few that will carry the sport

Boxing will go on like it always has and a new ppv star will rise.

Boxing is bigger then floyd and manny, if you think otherwise then you are probably more of a casual fan.

Boxing has been dying for years.

Once [insert famous boxer] retires, boxing is dead.

As heavyweights go, so goes boxing.

            Another black eye for boxing.

            Heard it all before.

Please explain how it's going to be tough being a fan in five years?

You didn't state the consequences of Mayweather/Pacquiao/Klitschko retiring, just that you think boxing will get worse. What consequences do you foresee?

I don't think dominance is a requirement for greatness. Yes, being able to dominate one's opponent is eye-catching, but a battle between two fighters of a similar caliber is good too. I think I prefer a skilled yet vulnerable champion more than a dominant one. I'm ready to see less of the long-established top-tier (May/Pac/JMM/Klitschko/Cotto) and more from the budding top-tier: Ward, Kovalev, Beterbiev, GGG, Canelo, Lara, Matts, Imam, Garcia, Peterson, Quillin, Crawford, Bradley, Rios, Thurman, Porter, Brook, Khan, Garcia, Frampton, Quigg, Rigo, Santa Cruz, Mares, Lomachenko, Walters, Gallito Estrada, Chocolatito Gonzalez, Wilder, Jennings, Charlo twins, DeGale, Groves, Eubank Jr, Verdejo, Pedraza, J.Rock Williams, Zurdo Ramirez, and I could probably name another dozen. As you said, somebody will fill the void left behind. Maybe none of them will reach the level of greatness Floyd or Pac reached, but all we can ask is for them to fight each other. If none of these fighters are great or special, it means we get more competitive fights and less one-sided affairs. That isn't something to hate on at all.

I think you'll be surprised how things play out. The next king is right in front of our face. They just haven't lifted the curtain.

Don't forget that Floyd and Pacquiao both showed vulnerability earlier in their careers. It's those fights that molded them and gave them that championship-caliber experience. One of these elite fighters you see today will emerge in similar fashion.

Floyd Mayweather Jr will definitely be missed, but boxing should be just fine, in a "back to the future" type way.

Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, and Erroll Spence Jr, to me, are all around the same level and will likely be at the top of the 147 division for some time to come (could have a run similarly to the Four Kings, with mixing and matching between those guys delivering great fights)

Beyond that, the heavyweight division is coming back in a major way.

Wilder(34), Fury(30), Anthony Joshua(30), and then Artur Szpilka(31), Bryant Jennings(35), Joseph Parker(28), Andy Ruiz(30), Dominic Breazeale(34) and others are all emerging/on the verge of emerging on the scene.

You have a loud, talkative heavyweight champion who actually comes to fight, and combine that with interest in the division actually including US/UK/Australia/Mexico/Eastern Europe/etc and things are going to be fun for some time.
