Comments Thread For: Bouncing Forward After a Danny, Zab, Ronda Weekend

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Random notes collected while digesting Sunday night’s Bounce TV premiere:

I love me some Paulie Malignaggi and I concede to having rooted hard for him Saturday night against Danny Garcia, but I must admit to having emerged from Saturday night’s Brooklyn show far more impressed with the eventual main-event winner than I had been with him at the outset.

Garcia was a worthy and deserving champion at 140 pounds and slayed the guy who held the silly “Most Avoided Fighter” title prior to Gennady Golovkin, but his image had been more recently smudged thanks to a mismatch with Rod Salka and iffy verdicts over Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson.

Given the collection of talent now residing at 147 pounds, I wasn’t sold it was the best place for him.

    Now I’m not so sure.

While it’s true that Malignaggi was coming off a long layoff and hadn’t actually won a fight since the tail end of 2013, he’d seemed confident and capable enough going in to at least give “Swift” the sorts of fits he’d encountered with other guys who brought something to the table beyond robotic aggression.

Instead, Garcia’s full-fledged welterweight incarnation was unfazed by Paulie’s attempts at irritation, remained committed to punishing the body whenever it was within reach and retained high energy levels into the later rounds where the junior welter version had oft-times found it lacking. not only was Paulie coming off a long lay off. He was also coming off a TKO loss to Shawn Porter. Garcia did not impress me. 147 isnt for him! IMO

It seems Lyle had forgotten that Garcia has indeed had his way with Khan...as did the rest of "Khans army". How could they forget when thats the last time Khans stepped in with a top fighter?

You must have forgotten that real fighters make adjustments and improve. I bet Garcia now couldnt do that now with Khan again.

So Rhonda has destroyed her #1,2,3,4 ranked competitors in devastating fashion but gets no credit until she faces a roided out Cyborg who can't make weight? Makes sense.

Funny, I made the same comparison to Tyson yesterday with my brother.

i see what fitzimmons did here, he didn't include Paulie's statement which leads into the statement Lyle quoted, Paulie explains that Angel Garcia is a great trainer that knows what he's doing with Danny, that it's Angel's great training that calms Danny down if there's any sort of frustration and which is why Danny is fresh when every round starts, after the TKO Danny was gonna talk to Paulie again and Angel ordered Danny and the doctors to sit Paulie down and they did so immediately, as if their common sense was clouded by the whole spectacle of the show except for Angel's, Swift is gonna run 147 it doesn't matter what a writer or a fan 'thought' cuz they won't think the same anymore, it doesn't matter what the Thurman fans, the Porter fans, the Spence fans, or whoever fans think, Danny is a special fighter, with special skills and a special character, the whole commotion of the Lucas fight didn't faze him nor did the strategic head butts by Herrera faze the 25 year old one bit, the most developed 147 fighter not named Floyd or Manny, fought all styles not just come forward fighters like the braided guy barking MayVinci's name like an angry ex, the Swift Era in the 147 division just begun, cheers Team DSG!

Someone's gotta keep the Garcia hype train going while he looks mediocre against mediocre competition. How much are you getting paid to blow smoke, Fitzsimmons and in what world is Paulie Malignaggi a benchmark for success at welterweight? What a joke. Unless Garcia decisively beats top 10, top 15 opposition, any talk of him dominating at welterweight is just that, talk. I can't wait to see who Haymon has Danny matched up with next. I'm willing to bet it's someone like Robert Guerrero or crazy ass Adrien Broner. No way he's fighting and clearly beating a top 10 opponent next.
