Comments Thread For: J. Mayweather: Broner Rode The Coattail, Got Exposed

Back in 2013, former three division world champion Adrien Broner was still regarded as one of the best rising fighters in the sport. There were many who compared him to pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In the fall of that year, Broner was dropped twice and lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana in a welterweight contest. Broner dropped down to junior welterweight and bounced back, winning three in a row before losing once again last month to former champion Shawn Porter.

Jeff has a point but I personally wouldn't mind seeing Broner get beat a couple more times. I also wouldn't mind seeing him take his sport seriously.

Broner sold himself as a superstar but the fact is he is just a decent fighter. He is not going to change his style. He'll be economical with his punches and inactivity will always be his downfall.

And the reason he'll never change that is because he has a subconscious fear of getting hit flush. It's like he is so concentrated on avoiding that one shot, that it affects his fluidity. You can see how awkwardly he reacts when those shots sneak in. He tries too hard to live up to that Mayweather type defense, and it shadows the rest of his arsenal. He needs to fight with more confidence and embrace the rest of his capabilities as a fighter.

I'd also like to see him beat a few more times, but I really want to see him KTFO.

Ok. Enough is enough. Broner was overhyped and all but Floyd's pops and uncles are the last one's that need to be talking about riding coat tails.

Broner accomplished more as a professional fighter than Sr. and Jeff combined. Roger can talk because he had a great boxing career himself.

While I agree with your entire statement can it not be said that Broner accomplished what he did because of timing and opportunity more so than because of skill. Soon as Malignaggi had a belt they were salivating, made him jump up two weight classes to rush to snatch it.
