He was once, immediately after the Super Six tournament ended. But that was four years ago and he has fought exactly three times since then, not once against a solid contender, twice against drained fighters and recently against an out of shape, untrained, empty, rusty tomato can. Ward's status in the sport is at an all time low.
Lemieux holds a MW title and GGG wants to unify all the titles in his division. This makes a fight with him much more important to the sport than a fight with Ward. You don't like it? Tough shit! Don't watch his fights.

When people talk about the best middleweights of all time 50 years from now, Hopkins name will be one of the first mentioned. Nobody will talk about GGG, because he was too ***** to step up and become an ATG. Nobody will even remember who GGG was.
Hopkins moved up to 175 because he lost twice to Taylor and literally nothing else was left for him at 160, where he spent almost 15 years fighting at. Hopkins wanted to redeem those losses, he wanted a legacy fight. He also said it was very hard for him to make 160 towards the end, he is 6'1 and obviously had the body frame to move up (look how muscular he was against Tarver).
As I've said before, Hopkins and Golovkin have extremely similar careers so far. Hopkins for years was avoided by the other title holders (mainly because of Don King) and Hopkins was forced to grind it out for YEARS fighting the best available opponents to him. Likewise, the other title holders have not been willing to get in the ring with Golovkin and he's been forced to fight the best guys available (typically top ten guys just like Hopkins). Eventually, at the age of 36, Hopkins finally got a unification fight against Holmes and then following a unification and big fight against Trinidad. Likewise, Golovkin is on the verge of getting a unification against Lemieux and hopefully followed by another unification and big fight against Canelo. Hopkins had a total of 20 title defenses, Golovkin is already at around 14. At the time, people said Hopkins should move up in weight, go to 168/175 and fight bigger names. People even accused Hopkins of ducking the Roy Jones rematch, a fight that Hopkins would have needed to move up in weight. But Hopkins stayed disciplined and eventually the big fights came to him. Same is being said about Golovkin. The patience and hard work paid off for Hopkins and it can for Golovkin as well. I do believe Golovkin will move up in weight sooner than Hopkins did though.
Very, very similar.

Lemieux isn't a complete and total bum, by any stretch of those words. He is a world champion, with an exciting style, a bit of charisma and a lot of fans in Canada.
He isn't as good as Ward, but beating him would raise GGG's profile and bring him another world title belt, as well as more money than he would get for fighting Ward right now.
And Lemieux is not a world-class fighter.
How the fcuk would Lemieux be a better win than Ward ?

Whether or not GGG unifies 160 means absolutely **** all in hindsight. He's supposed too. He's the most dominant figure there. He should grab ahold of his baby nuts and man the **** up. Fight the next best fighter up at his weight class. After all, he's the one that claimed he could do it.

What does Golovkins ancient history show..... ?
