  • Wilder's team needs to stop letting Wilder hold his hands so low and close to his chest.

I'm on the record that Wilder deserves cong**** for his victory.

I maintain, he is not very good.

That was a good win, he pulled it off.

He just isn't a very skilled boxer.

He gets by on his power and he proved something here. Congratulations to him for rising to the occasion.

I just don't think his skill level is that high.

You got to wonder what an elite jabber like Holmes or Lewis would of done to Wilder

        • Good win by Wilder. He has showed some good qualities in these last few fights. Most, if not every heavyweight would have had trouble with Szpilka's movement and style that was shown in this fight. Wilder was trying too hard for an early knockout so he made a few clumsy moves and looked bad but that happens to the best of fighters if they're impatient. Szpilka was very good defensively and took a few really big shots very well.

After round 6 or 7 you could see Szpilka was starting to gas. Wilder was pretty reckless the first 3 or 4 rounds but he settled down and stopped trying to rush the knock out. Szpilka was gassing and Wilder started using his jab and waiting for a big counter opportunity. The result was a good knockout by Wilder. Just because he didn't look as coordinated as a ballerina doesn't mean he did a bad job. If you have an awkward opponent you can't look perfect. Can't believe I'm defending Wilder but the hate is just ridiculous. He did well in this fight and so did Szpilka ...aside from gassing and getting caught with a big shot.

          • This was a good fight. Great atmosphere. Lots of boxing stars in the house and a very entertaining post fight war of words. Haha. I didn't expect Szpilka to do as well as he did because Jennings beat him down pretty convincingly. But I think Jennings is way under-rated and he has a shot at beating Wilder if they were ever to fight.

If Fury and Wilder fight I expect Fury to be the favourite because stylistically he would have the advantage. After seeing this fight I have to give Wilder a good chance at beating Potvetkin. Potvetkin is not a mover. He'd have to get in close and stay in close to beat Deontay. I think Klischko and Fury both beat Wilder though. If Haye hasn't faded he has a decent shot at beating Wilder too. Ortiz has a puncher's chance but he seems a bit too immobile and can be picked apart at a distance. Joshua and Parker.....the jury is still out on those guys. Maybe, maybe not.

            • Wilder is a good fighter but limited, he doesn't have much other than a right hand. Decent jab, decent footspeed and is athletic.

Skill wise though I'm not impressed.

I was actually impressed with Szpilka. I'd like to see him fight Anthony Joshua.

Szpilka is too good for Joshua. I doubt they'd ever match him.

                • Is Martin with Haymon? Whatever the case, he did what you're supposed to do against a top Main Events fighter. Don't let it go to the judges . He avoided the shadey judging that happens in a lot of Main Events fights involving their top talents.

                    You could be right there.

I'd give him a decent shot to catch him clean and hurt him.

I've never given credence to the Stiverne dehydration stuff, but that's really starting to look like an anomalous performance for either Wilder or Stiverne himself given the context we now have. Wilder's always been wild, but he was made to look like an absolute fool on more than one occasion last night, particularly the sequence when he threw two wild haymakers in a row that totally missed Szpilka's head by a country mile. Amateur hour stuff. He also struggled big time with the movement and feints of Szpilka, which doesn't bode at all well for a showdown with Fury. The knockout shot was a beauty and proof that he can end fights at any time, but this isn't something new, and Wilder was helped to a degree by Szpilka's openness.
I agree with every part of this, and it's the reason why I can't say Wilder is the best heavyweight out there. He still looks amateurish in the ring.
