Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter Responds to Reports of Hopkins Bout

There have been some published reports stating that a fight between WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, and former two-division beltholder Bernard Hopkins, is being negotiated for the fall. While the likes of Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez are scheduled to mix it up in November, Golovkin's quest for a meaningful fight continues.

"Gennady's focus is on unifying the middleweight titles right now."

Oct 2015 - Fights a non title holder at middleweight.

Agreed. Fighting B-Hop is a lose-lose situation for Gennady.

Best case scenario, you go in there and blow a 50 year old man out the water which has already been done recently and get little credit for beating a former great who ppl will say stuck around longer than he should have.

Worst case scenario, you get your @ss whooped by that 50 year old man..

Nah, I actually would love to see Lara or Ward vs GGG. I don't think anyone can hate on GGG if he beat one or both of those 2 guys, both are in their prime, highly skilled and proven on a world class level.
B-Hop on the other hand is nearly a senior citizen who hasn't fought below 175 since Bush was president. Easy to shoot holes in that victory if it happened.

Yeah his option seem very limited at the moment. Canelo and Cotto won't fight him this year. Neither will Lemieux. Quillin and Jacobs obviously can't. Lara is a garbage fight, imo(and probably not possible with the whole PBC/HBO thing). Don't know how possible a fight with Froch actually is. We can go on with this for a while to be honest.

He's already beaten a good amount of the top 20 guys in the division without ever getting a change to unify any belts. Only thing he can really do at this point is either take the rest of the year off or fight the best available opponent(which will probably be someone mediocre at best) and hope he gets a crack at Lemieux/Cotto/Canelo some time next year.

Good to hear, this is one fight that should not happen.

Agree with pretty much everything else u said but how is Lara a garbage fight especially compared to GGG's recent dance partners? Hell WMJ is basically a bootleg inexperienced version of Lara (also coming up from 154) and he arguably gave GGG as many problems as anyone else he's fought

And If both guys really wanted it I don't see Haymon or HBO getting in the way. Tired of ppl using that excuse when its convenient.

Tbh, there is nobody in the middleweight division that poses a threat to GGG. Canelo is really the only one in the 154-160 range that would be a great match-up. He should move up to 168. I would have given the edge to Ward 2 years after the super six but now I think it is a toss up, I still slightly favor Ward though.
