How about we compare the fight purses from friday night fights where guys were making 50K-100K to fight. Thurman just made over mil in his purse. Hell the total purses combined on sat was what 10-15X more then what they paid friday night fights. Or the millions PBC just spent producing and promoting. Fact is this fight lost MILLIONS of dollars and got WORSE debut TV ratings then SPIKE TV got for PBC. Worse ratings then Khan got on SPIKE TV and Spike doesn't have the influence in sports that ESPN. This is a bad start for PBC on ESPN and shows that Thurman has a long way to go to get his star level up. Only 4K in live attendance and terrible TV ratings.

Wasn't khans peek like 1.2 mil??? most were saying khan did good numbers.

First the average was well below khans fight. The peak was lower then khan. And the ratings for the 18-49 demographics were lower. And again this was on ESPN which should have more influence in sports and already showed boxing for decades. Spike lesser network and first time airing boxing got better TV ratings. Not a good sign. And comparing thus to Friday night fights which was a vehicle for prospects and unknown fighters who fought for no money and comparing this to a prime time sat show with guys making 7 figure purses and headlined by a fighter who has been the flagship fighter on PBC and being groomed to fight on PPV. these are bad ratings and spinning it or comparing it to FNF will not change that.

PBC on ESPN was competing that night as well with UFC... didn't they have a ppv that night???

Did khan compete vs a ufc ppv card or something like that?

Get Over The Ratings; We Care About Who The Best Fighter Is, Not TV Ratings!

Thurman looked bad, forget that real weak cliche, styles make fights. Every time someone under performs, they play that card. Thurman looked bad. Khan won't fight top Welter talent, and Brook & Porter are the two best Welters this side of Floyd & Manny. I'd love to see Thurman fight Bradley or Khan. I'd love to see Bradley and Brook, or Brook-Marquez in Wembley. We want the great match ups period.

Such was the case, for at least some, on Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.

The match with the New Yorker was Thurman***8217;s third since a prolonged injury-related absence. And the eighth-round surrender he induced while far ahead on all scorecards provided a third straight victory over opponents who***8217;d brought 99 wins, 48 knockouts and three world titles with them to the ring.

On the surface, it seemed all the versatile validation he needed.

But by the time the parking lots had cleared out, the whispers had begun. [Click Here To Read More]
Excellent article, couldn't agree more. I think we have to now doubt his "one time" power, but other than that it was a solid performance. Very much undue response from the fans.

There have been multiple PBC cards that did not go head to head with UFC and still bombed pulling in bad TV ratings. This is the new excuse when PBC can't pull ratings they went up against Golf, They went up against the NBA, they went up against Nascar they went up against tennis lol Every failed event is because other sports that aired that night. I can't wait till College Football comes back in the fall. That's going to be the next excuse.

Great article to write because this goes on all the time. Boxing is dangerous every a fighter gets in the ring. Thurman was clearly better than Louis but one body shot in the 5th has everyone doubting him now. Well nobody thinks he is a hall of famer just we think he may be one of the best fighters in the class. To many critics out there. Personally I think adversity helps fighters so winning a fight like this is good for him. Does anyone remember Cotto vs Corley?

Nicely written piece, but to rate Thurman so highly before seeing him tested was always premature. "Quickly exiting the bandwagon" is the only possibility when a fighter has been built up too much. He's good, but he's not done anything yet that's great.
