Comments Thread For: Thurman: Does One Time Need More Time Before Big Time?

By Jake Donovan - Keith Thurman was determined for two things to come out of his welterweight showdown with Luis Collazo: return to his old knockout ways, and present a formidable future challenge to pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The unbeaten titlist did in fact pick up his first knockout win in more than a year, and went out of his way to openly challenge Mayweather, who is still in the market for an opponent for a planned September 12 fight in Las Vegas. Whether or not either instance rallied public support is another matter altogether.

Headlining the first edition of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on ESPN, Thurman forced Collazo to quit on his stool prior to the start of round eight Saturday evening at USF Sun Dome in Tampa. The bout served as Thurman's first fight near home (originally from Clearwater, trains out of the Tampa/St. Petersburg area) in nearly six years, and it showed with a packed house on hand for the latest entry of a "#FreeBoxingForAll" campaign being led by PBC and series creator, adviser Al Haymon. Definitely no doubt about it at all.

"That's good news for Thurman, and perhaps for those who may feel that he is in fact not ready for such a fight. "
Removed the unnecessary bit at the end there.

Just got around to watching the fight and I think people are being overly critical about his performance. I guess that is the result of not fighting a top quality opponent though, people's expectation get set high. I think he is still a solid boxer, granted his "one time" power may have been overrated.

All that said, I don't think he would be a good opponent for Mayweather. Would like to see Thurman take on a top ten welter next.

I am off the Thurman bandwagon and I think I had him overrated. I was down on him after his safety first fight with Bundu but got high on him after he beat the hell out of Guerrero. Now he struggles with a guy Khan so easily beat and knocked down 3 times. Thurman is really not one time Thurman. He is a good puncher but not a huge puncher or Collazo would have been knocked down with all the big shots Thurman landed. I think he is about the 5th or 6th best welterweight in the world but not the best. I think Mayweather, Brook and Pacquiao all beat him. He is about an even fight with Khan, Porter or Bradley. To me he is not the future of the welterweight division. He is in the mix but he is not a standout.

I'll give some of the disappointing performance the benefit of the doubt.

Teddy said Keith hurt his left hand in training. Keith barely jabbed tonight.

Being jabless will make any fight harder.

That being said Keith isn't the most consistent guy. A good jab controls him at range. He also isn't very good on the inside and his power would be smothered there.

Keith always gets off to a very fast start trying to KO the other guy. He slows down and looks less than stellar if he's unable to get them out early. Boxing is a game of patience, endurance, and strategy.

                Disappointing

He gets hurt from a body shot. Now, you know where to go if you want to hurt or stop him. The body..

Also don't like when fighters refer to themselves as the third person.

I like Thurman, been watching him since he knocked out Orlando Lora on HBO. His performance tonight was not terrible by any means, but it definitely does not warrant a Mayweather fight. Although he is not a bad boxer, he should go back to slugging. You can't beat Mayweather at boxing!

There is no big time for Thurman. Floyd made it clear he wants none of him + Floyd retires after Sept. I don't see Haymon matching up Thurman with Pacquiao either. There are no big fights for Thurman at 147 unless Maidana decides to lose all that weight & come back.
