Comments Thread For: Pavlik Says Cotto Too Small, Golovkin-Canelo is The Fight

Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik feels the current king of the division, WBA/IBO champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs), is without a serious dance partner.

Back during Pavlik's time, the middleweight division was pretty loaded with names like Sergio Martinez, Edison Miranda, Jermain Taylor, Arthur Abraham, Winky Wright.

At the moment Golovkin is running out of options due to scheduling issues and political conflicts with certain opponents being contracted exclusively to rival television networks.

A little ironic to hear Pavlik say guys at MW are too big for Cotto, he was a SMW fighting among those type of MW's. And LOL about his MW division being stronger. He had Taylor and that's a big win, but Rubio, Lockett, and Espino...

He never made fights with Sturm, Abraham, or Wright. The division was so weak during his run he signed to fight Mora and pulled up a JMW in Martinez (same with Taylor's run of 3 defenses vs JMW's).

This is why I'm rooting for Canelo to win. If GGG beats Cotto, he'll get no credit.

Fact of the matter is a prime Pavlik vs current GGG would have been a war, a prime Pavlik vs currrent Cotto would have been a massacre.

Got to agree with Pavlik here. While most Middleweights are 180lbs going down to 160lbs to weigh-in, Cotto is probably 160lbs going down to 154lbs on weigh-ins, lol.

That's why Cotto could probably make 147lbs still if he pushed himself just a little bit further in training or stayed more discipline to take the weight off safer?

I'm not saying Cotto needs to puss out and avoid true 160lbers (well I kind of am), but I think he shouldn't fight in a division he doesn't really want any part of. He can fight at 154lbs OK, but release the 160lbs title if your not going to go all in.

Pavlik is right, but that's Cotto's problem. He needs to give up the MW belt.

It would be a brutal massacre if he fought GGG. It would be like seeing a street fight after school between a loudmouth pretender and a real deal who's been waiting for his chance. You know it's going to be ugly, but it's also satisfying to see the diva get murdered and put back in his place.

At this point, it would probably take too much out of Cotto to try to make 147, which is unfortunate. There's just no way he's ever going back there.
