Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Cotto-Canelo Bigger Than Me and Trinidad!

Golden Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, says the upcoming November battle with WBC middleweight king Miguel Cotto will be the biggest ever Puerto Rico vs. Mexico showdown on pay-per-view.

In 1999, De La Hoya battled Felix "Tito" Trinidad in a huge showdown between Puerto Rico and Mexico. The bout set the pay-per-view record for a non-heavyweight fight with 1.4 million buys, until it was broken by De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5, 2007 with 2.4 million.

        no way!

Oscar was HUGE and a household name. even the non boxing fans, casuals all knew him and wanted to watch him fight. he and trinidad were the two biggest stars at welter and both undefeated at the time. no way cotto vs canelo is bigger than that fight. but hopefully this fight will be far more entertaining and not have a sketchy outcome.

Agree with you 100% on this. I still think it would be a good fight though.

neither of these guys do big numbers when mayweather/pacquiao aren't involved. usually in the 300-400k range. i would be surprised if this matches the 1.4 million that oscar-trinidad did, nevermind beating that number.
