I'd have to say I enjoyed Bowe-Holyfield the most.

Yeah I'm going to have to agree with the topic starter.

Thrilla was great, full of action, lasted even longer and the scenario itself was bigger than life.

I wasn't jumping out of my chair like I was Bowe v.s. Holyfield.

      That's all I can say.

            Norton-Ali #3

A few days ago, after downloading it off the internet, I saw the 3rd fight between Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali from Sept. 1976. I had seen their 1st 2 fights when they happened (yeah I'm that old) but somehow missed #3. It was a great fight. Ali had a lot of trouble with Norton's style, and I thought that Norton won the fight by means of a preponderance of hard, clean blows, especially body shots when Ali was against the ropes. Ali could take a sledgehammer to the body and not even wince, which by itself made him special. Most other heavyweights would have crumbled from Norton's body attack alone.

In those days, which I remember very well since I was in college, you had to totally dominate Ali in order to beat him, and the fight was close enough in some rounds that the judges and referee Arthur Mercante gave the fight to Ali:

            http://boxrec.com/date_search.php?yyyy=1976&mm=09&dd=28

How about that card with Shavers, Mercado and Mike Rossman on the undercard?

Ali didn't clinch much in the fight, since it never did him any good against Norton, who could hold his own against Ali from the outside with his cross-armed style, similar to Archie Moore, and adopted later by George Foreman. In fact, Ali was flat-footed for much of the fight, especially in the later rounds. He danced around for the 15th round but didn't land much, while Norton chased him and landed a few shots.

Although I feel that Ali lost, he fought with great courage that night, standing toe to toe with Norton for a lot of it. In my opinion, Ali took way too much punishment from Norton, and only his incredible will allowed him to survive and look fresh when it was over. I believe that the judges and Mercante were swayed by the fact that Ali never looked hurt or stunned during the fight. I encourage you to watch it yourself and see if you don't think that Norton should have won!

Watching a tape of the Rumble in the Jungle a couple of years ago opened my eyes to boxing and I said to myself "Damn, if fights have this much intensity and charisma now-a-days I should start watching." and forgot all about MMA and got hooked to boxing. To me it was the greatest heavyweight fight ever to see the underdog shock the world like that in such a historical fight, but action wise it's gotta be the Thrilla in Manila for all time.

I think the Thrilla is in a class all by itself but let me give a little props to a fight none has mentioned....

David Tua vs. Ike Ibeabuchi...I believe it holds the all time punch stat record for a HW fight and it only went 10 rounds.

They landed blows repeatedly against one another that very very very few HW's that I have seen could take...Ali and Frazier are in a class all by themselves but if I have to pop in a tape to get my blood pumping before sex it isnt Ali and Joe...its Ike and the Tuaman...amazing stuff!

I personally enjoyed Ali/Frazier I better than the other two fights between the two.Holyfield/Bowe was indeed very exciting. My personal favorite tho was watching Lewis pummel Tyson I just loved that **** even tho it was of course not one of the best HW fights I am simply sharing my opinion.
